THIS IS INSANE ! NBA is doing it again. Entering new territories and leading the way in digital fan engagement. Thanks to the NBA (and Apple) VR could finally take off. 15 years ago my eyes were opened to the fact that National Basketball Association (NBA) is in fact not a sports company, but a tech company and a lifestyle brand. They were such an inspiring example I wrote a casestudy about it in my book on #China’s #DigitalLandscape. When I did my reseach in China, I learned there are more basketball fans in China than people living in the USA and wanted to understand how?!? A local NBA director and China old hand, Mike Fitzmaurice, showed me around in the cunning strategic and tech focused decisions the company had been making since the early 80’s. Today basketball has over 500 million fans in China. That’s just mindblowing. Those fans, which NBA created pretty much on its own, are helping to fund the mindblowing digital innovation you can see in the below video. Check it out !! Let’s talk about the numbers behind Electronic Arts (EA) College Football 25. There are a reported ~11,390 college football players included in the game. Each player received $600 and a free copy of the game, roughly ~$670 in value. Around 7.6 million, round to 8M for misc freebies. Let’s assume the marketing for the game was 100M and salaries, R&D, and other costs for distribution etc were another 100M. $208 million total cost. ~$292 million in profit. The game has been out for two weeks. Now, after a decade of froth for a title update, these numbers will surely come down in subsequent years. Noththeless, these are staggering for the gaming industry and proof that capturing sports fandom is more lucrative than ever. So, moving forward, how much should players ask for including their NIL in the game? Three times as much? 10? There’s a strong argument that the stars should be asking for much, much more.
