Don't you think the Office of Health, Safety, and Environment in the Engineering Industry is becoming like the Office of Nurses in the Health Industry, where individuals badge into the field because of unemployment and think it is a fast way of finding a job and making money? Why? Because they find it to be an easy profession where you attend training for 1 month, whether online or face-to-face, and after the one month of training, you are a safety officer by certificate, with no experience or passion. Some even arrive on site with an air of arrogance. We've seen safety officers who are afraid of heights, have poor human relations, and don't take the time to listen to technicians, thinking safety is just about what they learned in class. To work safely is not only about the control measures in place, the training you give your workforce, or the fear you instill in workers. Please, to the safety officers, we do the JSA together, but we are the ones on the task, so please listen to us sometimes because some hazards can be seen only by the one on the task. Remember, the workforce can be safe but not work safely because to work safely is a conscious effort with discipline since it is a personal responsibility. Please, let's elevate the safety profession to a higher level, recognizing the significance of protecting human life, property, and the environment. It's time to take a more disciplined and responsible approach to safety. #HUMBLEweld🧑🏭❤️🔥

Safety is everyone's responsibility. However, safety professionals are there to assess, guide and advise workers at site on safe work practices. The reason why toolbox meeting is held before every task is to discuss the task in details, this includes the task to be carried out, the competence of the personnel carrying out the task, the risk involved, the preventive measures put in place, the tools to be used, the appropriate PPE for the task and emergency response plan in case of any incident/accident.. The toolbox meeting gives room for everyone involved in the task to discuss and air their opinion on how the task can be done without any incident/accident. As HSE professionals, we are trained to assess - this involves assessing the risk involved in a job/task, advise - give valid reason why we need to put the right preventive measures in place and ensure it is done, motivate - uplift the team spirit by giving incentives to safety champions to motivate others and finally enforce - by ensuring the right thing is done at all time....

Sorry you’ve had negative circles of HSE’s - change your circles. Any HSE that causes a company to lose property, life or otherwise risks his job because companies don’t entertain such unqualified outcomes and apparently, no one finds a job to make money only to misbehave and get sacked and at times sued and finally to ‘cos90’. Have you ask why they did what they did dear? To me, it’s okay for a safety officer to be afraid of heights and still be doing well rather than one that is not afraid of heights and ignores his duty. One thing is not all engineering fields/ branches deals with heights. Interestingly, it’s not a fast way of finding a job and making money. and people badge in because even the pure water seller or the idle person needs knowledge on safety and if all of us badge in, our country will be a better place to be. We need our safety flag high, let them badge in, passion, knowledge and skill will do the separation. Whoever gives you this impression again, refer the person to me for deliverance.😃

Am not fully aware of the background to this but i feel there is a gap in your business with the way you perceive safety. Firstly people think safety is so easy manage at times you don't even need a safety officer and this is where most companies get it wrong. Secondly a person who attends short courses can be a certified safety officer to manage a work place, check again with your HR team on the recruitment process there could be gaps which needs to be resolved. One of the key qualities of a professional safety officer is treating people with respect and pay attention to concerns raised by others these are key to team work.

I wish to contribute on the statement you just shared sorry if I will sound yo be against to what you have said. I used to think why do big/small companies employ a safety officer there is a big cost these people cut and a big roll in making companies do well, they say no Job is so important that can be done without safety, you will see that a company will invest it's money to train people to instill them with the safety awareness the HAZARDS that are in that environment, I have felt the pain of losing someone on site just because he did not follow safety rules.

The safety officers in your company would not be happy when they've read this.

Interesting insight! I wonder the kind and type of safety professionals our friend's employers have been engaging. But I find it unfortunate that he has not had the opportunity to work and relate with some of the best crop of guys in the profession. Some of us left promising Metallurgy, Mining, Mechanical, Chemical, etc engineering careers to opt for HSE. This HSE profession isn't gotten on a silver platter as Michael will want it look like.

I like this part, "Remember, the workforce can be safe but not work safely because to work safely is a conscious effort with discipline since it is a personal responsibility." Safety is not only about the work environment but the mental state and social environment also play key roles.
