A sad news story again about a man who died waiting for therapy. The biggest mistake though that can be made to remedy this is using the universities to recruit oncologists (which is what’s suggested in the article). The health care workforce and academic workforce is not the same. Hospital / clinical care services should be doing the recruitment. A rapid triage process can be done by a front line oncologist. The solution should focus on serving the public and not academia. This is a major and fundamental flaw - trying to get medical staff through academia - the most inefficient process I’ve seen anywhere and this absolutely must change if there is to be rapid progress. There are other ways to handle academic cross appointment and provide research time. The other problem is when you start working, all of the tools you need to make a difference aren’t at your disposal - the health care system needs to understand this in order to attract the sharpest minds.

Rochester Post(Rochester, MN) dated January 27, 1864, carried an advertisement for a medical practice called Mayo Clinic – located over the Union Drug Store on 3rd Street, with a catchy caption “all calls answered by day or night.” It was well over a century and half before ‘patient centered care’ entered the healthcare lexicon. The legacy of Dr. William Worrall Mayo who established Mayo clinic as a solo practice was carried on by his children: Dr. William J. Mayo and Dr. Charles H. Mayo – the Mayo brothers, who built the foundations of the modern day Mayo Clinic. Mayo Clinic has consistently been rated as the #1 hospital or near the top for over 35 years. It’s a unique distinction, worthy of the spirit of dedication to patient care, as embodied by the Mayo brothers. Dr. Joe Brudny’s experience of the holocaust and the subsequent experience of treating WWII veterans was the crucible in which the modality of EMG biofeedback began to take shape. This was further shaped into a useful modality by Dr. Gordon Silverman – then Professor at Rockefeller University and the inventor of the technology behind EZ-Pass. JOGO is named after Joe and Gordon – the pioneers whose legacy we are privileged to carry on at JOGO Health. Pursuit of science in service of mankind is the holy grail of medicine. Essential tremors affects over 7 million Americans and a far greater number outside the United States. The clinical study in partnership with Mayo holds the potential for creating evidenced treatments and for moving the needle in patient care. Nothing could be more befitting to the legacies of our respective organizations. https://lnkd.in/gAhNgaRt

Today, we are thrilled to announce our nationwide clinical study in progress at leading health organizations including Johns Hopkins, Yale University, University of Colorado, University of Wisconsin, Washington University, multiple Planned Parenthood locations, Woman’s Hospital in Baton Rouge, Alabama Clinical Therapeutics/Birmingham OBGYN, Unified Women’s Clinical Research, and more to be announced. Our clinical trial is designed to support FDA submission and approval of our at-home self-collect device, the Teal Wand™. By offering an alternative to an in-person doctor’s visit for a speculum exam, we will be able to provide women and people with a cervix a choice and greater access to this critical health screening, on which 1 in 4 women in the US are not up-to-date. This clinical study follows an initial study that included over 220 participants ranging in age, race, socioeconomic status, and education across multiple states and regions. The study demonstrated that not only did participants successfully self-collect a sample, but that it was much preferred to the speculum - 92% said if they knew the results were equal they would prefer self-collection, and 87% reported they would stay current with screening if Teal Wand was an option. Self-collection took the vast majority under 2 minutes to complete, and 97% of study participants reported it was very easy or easy to use. Day 2 at ESMO - European Society for Medical Oncology was exciting. I met with Victoria Harvey-Jones PhD to discuss our passion for patient inclusion in medical education. Victoria is leading this in the medical education industry at Medscape and striving to always include the patient voice in every program she designs by creating alliances with top investigators and patient experts. Natacha Bolaños, Inés Vaz Luis, Luzia Travado, Jana Pelouchova and Sandrine Lavallé presented on the impact of a cancer journey focusing on how a cancer diagnosis is really a turning point in the patients´ lives. Fear for cancer recurrence can be high and these patients need additional psychological support. Important aspects such as the burden of living with long term side effects (LTSEs) were discussed and how to help patients cope with them. Excellent examples about how to improve communication between HCPs and patients were given as well as ideas on how to support patients once treatment has been concluded. Working with individuals such as these experts helps us learn, improve and provide more patient centric healthcare and really understand the unmet needs of the patient population. #ESMO2024 #patientadvocacy #patientjourney

6moMichael Gieske I enjoyed presenting to Dr. Douglas Flora, MD, LSSBB, FACCC and his amazing St. Elizabeth team last week about proactive supportive care. I helped create several cancer prehab programs for the UC Cancer Center. However, we can do even better. I believe we should be encouraging lifestyle changes including exercise for individuals that are under lung nodule surveillance. Increasing functional status will improve outcomes for those patients that will need surgery and possibly increase percentage of those that meet eligibility for curative surgery.
