On 1st Feb, 2024, we as Mr & Miss Kenya Forest Service 🇰🇪 2024, undertook a tree planting exercise along Ngong road whereby we also sensitized a few stakeholders on the importance of taking this personal initiative without feeling forced or compelled by anyone. If we all engage in this exercise willingly and joyfully, we shall realise it's fruit now and in the future. Given that trees are representations of nature, life, growth, and tranquilly, it makes sense that they have aroused people's curiosity for millennomies. With more than 60,000 different types of trees present globally, trees and most human populations have a tight association. The many benefits that trees provide, including food, shade, clean water, and air, allow humanity to survive. They also give us courage to persevere through the most difficult moments, understanding, and hope. Trees remind us to stay rooted even as they soar to great heights. #mrkenyaforest2024 #treesforbetterlives #RoadTo15BillionTrees #kenyaforestservice #misskenyaforest2024

🌍✨ Emotions Drive Action: Celebrating Earth Day in Midigo, Uganda ✨🌍 #EarthDay is a powerful reminder of our interconnectedness with our planet, where emotions play a pivotal role in driving actions for its preservation. Our dedicated team at WNIH in Uganda is spearheading a place-based development approach in Midigo, nestled within the Yumbe District, that taps into the deep emotional attachment of its people. Our journey begins with understanding the unique potential of Midigo through engaging discussions and gathering insights from the local community. What emerges is a shared purpose centered around the health of the "Shea belt food system," characterized by semi-wild shea trees. These trees not only provide ecological and economic benefits to farmers and the community but also serve as a source of pride and tradition. From fruits to oil-rich nuts, the shea trees offer valuable resources that support livelihoods and foster a vibrant agricultural ecosystem. However, the very existence of the shea tree species is under threat from various factors, including forest encroachment and indiscriminate cutting. Yet, amidst these challenges, lies the promise of regeneration, fueled by the resilience of the shea tree belt and the unwavering commitment of the community to steward the land. On this #EarthDay, we take pride in championing regenerative practices that foster a deep connection between people and the land, particularly with the sacred Shea trees. By restoring and protecting our natural ecosystems, we honor our commitment to Earth and pave the way for a healthier, more resilient future for all. #EarthDay2024 #RegenerativeDevelopment #Sustainability #SheaTrees #CommunityEngagement #EnvironmentalConservation #REFOOTURE

Much of #Uttarakhand's population is directly dependent on the forest resources for meeting their daily utility (land, water, food) demands. But with the increasing loss of natural habitats and overexploitation of forest resources, there is a moral and economic imperative for conservation efforts. Intellecap's recent work with the Government of Uttarakhand, supported by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), was a glowing testament to how this could be achieved. The Uttarakhand Forest Resource Management Program (UFRMP) was initiated with the primary objectives of 🌳 Ecological restoration 👷♀️ Improved livelihoods 💲 Enhanced income opportunities ⚙ Overall community development The subsequent outcomes and large-scale impact of the initiative demonstrate our ability in building local and bespoke solutions in fragile and vulnerable contexts. I often get asked, "What is the extent of Intellecap's climate action work?" For us, there is no choice between ecological restoration + community development AND commercialisation of tech based climate solutions. Both are urgent and essential. Protecting forests and empowering local communities with sustainable livelihoods are at the heart of our mission. Through innovative strategies and holistic solutions, we are committed to creating a greener, more resilient planet. #UFRMP #ForestConservation #CommunityEmpowerment #SustainableDevelopment #ClimateAction #EcoRestoration

📢 WHICH ROAD FOR KENYA? 🇰🇪 The Ihithe - Ndunyu Njeru road will slice through a staggering 36.78 km of the Aberdares ecosystem, endangering our precious forests, wildlife, and water catchment areas. In stark contrast, the Ndaragwa - Kariamu - Ndunyu Njeru alternative route impacts only 3.98 km of the ecosystem, preserving critical habitats while still delivering economic benefits. The choice is clear: 🌍 Environmental Impact: The Ihithe - Ndunyu Njeru route threatens 255 acres of natural vegetation, including montane forests and bamboo, putting endangered wildlife at risk. The alternative route preserves the ecosystem, keeping the Aberdares intact for future generations. 🚧 Community Well-being: The Ndaragwa - Kariamu - Ndunyu Njeru alternative supports local communities by providing better access to markets without sacrificing the environment. It avoids the heavy traffic, accidents, and wildlife collisions expected on the Ihithe - Ndunyu Njeru proposed route. 💰 Cost Efficiency: With a lower construction cost, the Ndaragwa - Kariamu - Ndunyu Njeru alternative offers a more economically viable solution, channeling funds to where they’re needed most. We must advocate for progress that respects both our people and our planet. Let’s push for the Ndaragwa - Kariamu - Ndunyu Njeru alternative route and protect the Aberdares from irreversible damage. 📢 Join us in saying NO to the destruction of our natural heritage and YES to sustainable development! #SupportAberdareRoadAlternative #SaveTheAberdares #CancelNEMALicence #AberdareYetu #SustainableDevelopment

The proposed Ihithe - Ndunyu Njeru road project, with approximately 9.8% of its route passing through the Aberdare National Park - approximately 49 kilometers - raises significant concerns about its potential environmental, social, and economic impacts. ENVIRONMENTAL & ECOLOGICAL THREATS: 1️⃣ Disruption to Wildlife & Habitat: The Aberdare National Park is a biodiversity hotspot, home to various wildlife species, including endangered animals like the mountain bongo. A road through this ecosystem increases the risk of habitat fragmentation, disturbing natural migration patterns and exposing wildlife to dangers like vehicle collisions and poaching. 2️⃣ Water Catchment Areas at Risk: The Aberdare Range is one of Kenya’s vital water catchment areas, providing water to major rivers such as the Tana and Athi. The construction of the road could lead to deforestation, soil erosion, and siltation of rivers, severely affecting water supply for millions of people. This would compromise water security, affecting agriculture, urban centers, and industries dependent on this resource. SOCIAL & ECONOMIC CONCERNS: 1️⃣ Increased Risk of Human-Wildlife Conflicts: By traversing through the park, the road poses a significant risk of accidents between vehicles and wildlife. The presence of a high-traffic route may cause animals to wander onto roads, leading to fatal accidents. This puts both humans and animals at risk. 2️⃣ Impact on Local Livelihoods: The communities surrounding the Aberdare region depend heavily on tourism, agriculture, and water resources. Any adverse effects on the park’s ecosystem would diminish its tourism appeal, leading to a reduction in income for local businesses, jobs in eco-tourism, and the overall economy. The alternative Nyandarua - Kariamu - Ndunyu Njeru road route represents a more balanced approach, addressing both developmental needs and environmental preservation. Aberdare Yetu advocates for this alternative to safeguard the region’s biodiversity, local livelihoods, and water resources, all of which are critical for the future sustainability of the area. #CancelNEMALicence #SupportAberdareRoadAlternative #SaveTheAberdares #AberdareYetu Rhino Ark Kenya Charitable Trust

Happy Kenya National 🌳#Tree Growing Day on #TreeFriday ! 🌳 On this significant occasion, we must confront a sobering reality: our nation's forest cover has been declining at an alarming rate of 80,000 acres per year since 1990. This unsustainable deforestation has severe consequences, exacerbating issues such as soil erosion and flooding, which we have witnessed firsthand in the last few weeks. We have an important role to play in reversing this trend and fostering a more sustainable future. Today, let us join forces and take action by planting trees, supporting reforestation initiatives, and advocating for eco-friendly practices. Plant a Tree today and this rainy season to #SaveOurForests.
