Dogs possess an exceptional sense of smell, far superior to humans. This heightened olfactory ability enables certain dogs, such as trained medical detection dogs, to detect medical issues in humans through scent. These dogs can identify changes in bodily odors associated with various diseases or conditions, including cancer, diabetes, seizures, and infections. Their remarkable olfactory skills make them valuable allies in medical diagnostics, offering early detection and potential lifesaving interventions. #dogfact #medicaldetection #earlydiagnosis #lifesavingdogs

Did you know what the process is called when a cell dies due to injury or disease? Necrosis is the term used to describe the process by which cells die due to injury or disease. Unlike the orderly and beneficial process of apoptosis, necrosis results from severe trauma to the cell, such as exposure to toxins, physical damage, or infection. During necrosis, cells lose their membrane integrity, swell, and eventually burst, spilling their contents into the surrounding area. This uncontrolled release can cause inflammation and damage to neighboring cells and tissues, often leading to further complications and health issues. One of the key challenges in treating conditions associated with necrosis is managing the inflammatory response it triggers. Excessive inflammation can hinder healing and lead to chronic problems. Researchers are actively exploring ways to limit the negative impact of necrosis, aiming to improve outcomes in conditions like myocardial infarction, strokes, and severe infections. #Biotech #Necrosis #CellDeath #Inflammation #MedicalInnovation https://lnkd.in/g_VWmx6E . #didyouknow #sciencetrivia

Controlled Cells VS Darier Cells 🧬 "In Darier disease, the adhesions which link our skin cells weaken and split, compromising the ability of our epidermis to form a protective barrier. This is apparent, even in cells observed in culture dishes. Here, in control cells, the proteins involved in binding neighboring cells together (red) are highly concentrated at cell borders and connect directly to the tough, keratin "skeleton" inside the cells, ensuring that cells do not rip apart from each other when mechanically stressed. In cultured Darier disease cells, the adhesive proteins are lost from cell borders and the keratin inside of cells pulls away from the cell edge, meaning that neighboring cells are easily torn from each other." - Robert M Harmon from Northwestern. Did you know what the process is called when a cell dies due to injury or disease? The answer is necrosis. Necrosis is a form of cell injury which results in the premature death of cells in living tissue by autolysis. It typically occurs because of factors external to the cell or tissue, such as infection, toxins, or trauma which result in the unregulated digestion of cell components. Unlike apoptosis, which is a naturally programmed form of cell death, necrosis is a chaotic process that results from cellular damage and often triggers inflammation due to the release of intracellular components after cell membrane integrity is compromised. https://lnkd.in/gFiADQ3A #didyouknow #sciencetrivia

'In the present study, we screened a large-scale randomly mutagenized mouse library by electrocardiography to establish a disease model of IASs and consequently found one pedigree that exhibited spontaneous ventricular arrhythmias (VAs) followed by sudden cardiac death within 1 y after birth.' https://lnkd.in/gDVV85NK

In addition to being #HeartHealth Month, February is also National #CatHealth Month, making the Feline NT-proBNP test even more relevant. Heart murmurs and other clinical signs of cardiac distress often do not present in feline patients, and when they do, they can be inconsistent with the actual condition. Testing for important biomarkers like NT-proBNP provides a reliable look into a cat’s heart health. #Bionote #Vcheck #AnimalHealth #VetMed

Sharing our Clear Clinical Communication Research Group’s work on how teenagers rarely understand what we say as doctors. Only 10% of teenagers understood that “bugs in the urine” meant we were saying they had a urinary tract infection (most common wrong answer was actual insects). Almost a third though “your tumor was progressing” was good news because progress is usually good. Aarabhi Rajagopal, MD, FAAP Jordan Marmet

What's Your Diagnosis?🤓 A 68-year-old male with a medical history relevant for systemic lupus erythematosus, antiphospholipid syndrome, chronic kidney disease, and atrial fibrillation presents with acute onset abdominal pain that started abruptly after straining on the toilet. Upon arrival at the ED, the patient is experiencing severe pain in the mid abdomen that does not radiate but is pulsatile in nature. 🩺Vitals: BP 90/50 mm Hg, HR: 120 bpm, RR: 20, afebrile, EKG is non-ischemic. Differentials include bowel ischemia, perforated viscus, abdominal aorta aneurysm, small bowel obstruction, and nephrolithiasis. See the results of an abdominal #POCUS and let us know your thoughts.
