On average, Americans estimate they need $1.46 million for a comfortable retirement, but the average amount US adults have saved is only $88,400. That's a significant gap! The trouble is that the average amount US adults have saved for retirement is $88,400. That is down slightly from last year, and down more than $10,000 since 2021. A million dollars isn’t the symbol of wealth that it used to be, but saving that much for retirement is still rare. Just 16% of retirees say they have more than $1 million saved, including all personal savings and assets, according to the recent CNBC Your Money retirement survey conducted with SurveyMonkey. In fact, among those currently saving for retirement, 57% say the amount they’re hoping to save is less than $1 million. Here’s why $1 million may not be enough for retirement.
