Toward Culturally Responsive Instructional Leadership from Structured Critical Self-Reflection (CRILS) ABSTRACT This study analyzes a principal preparation course structured by Culturally Responsive School Leadership (CRSL) and critical educational leadership research. Introducing CRILS (Culturally Responsive Instructional Leadership Structured by critical self-reflection), the methodology aims to humanize school experiences for Black and racially minoritized students. Through qualitative inquiry, including interviews and analysis of racial autobiographies, the study found that critical self-reflection helped participants recognize biases and confront negative emotional responses. CRILS extends CRSL by incorporating lessons from pre-Brown practices and emphasizes reflective practices among all school-affiliated adults to foster student learning and guidance opportunities.

In this piece, I consider how and why 'implementation' of a character-education curriculum needs to deeply engage the voices and experiences of teachers.

Dr. Dawn Brooks-DeCosta, Mark Anthony Gooden-'The Change You Want to See: A Culturally Responsive and Affirming Approach to School Leadership" In "The Change You Want to See," Dr. Dawn Brooks-DeCosta and Mark Anthony Gooden inspire school leaders to adopt an activist mindset that contributes to positive change for students and society. The authors present a comprehensive framework called culturally responsive and affirming social-emotional leadership (CRASEL), which integrates social-emotional learning with culturally responsive practices. This book focuses on building racial and cultural awareness amongst educators while addressing the social and emotional needs of both individuals and the community. By encouraging leaders to embody the principles of CRASEL, the authors aim to foster environments where all students feel valued and supported, ultimately shaping a future marked by inclusivity and equity in education. Overall, "The Change You Want to See" serves as a vital resource for school leaders committed to enacting meaningful change and developing culturally responsive practices within their institutions.

Alta Vista High School is an alternative high school in Mountain View serving Mountain View-Los Altos Union High School District and Palo Alto Unified School District. With a grant from Santa Clara County, Alta Vista students now have access to the revamped student-run “Aztec Boutique,” which provides new and gently used clothing as well as toiletries and shoes for students. This school year, students also have the opportunity to participate in Hip Hop Leadership Academy, which integrates music, culture, writing, and critical thinking to develop leadership skills. These offerings help foster an improved learning environment for students. Santa Clara County Supervisor Joe Simitian proposed funding for the Mountain View-Los Altos Union High School District to support these efforts. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gervHePh
