An Injustice Watch investigation reveals the stark reality for thousands of lower-income renters in Chicago, who live in unsafe buildings while facing rising rents. This yearlong examination shows that tenants frequently encounter #eviction and informal displacement while navigating a complex legal system that hinders their ability to seek assistance. The gap between #affordablehousing supply and demand has reached its widest point in a decade, with slum conditions persisting in American cities despite widespread agreement that they should not exist. This ongoing crisis is compounded by decades, even centuries, of scandals surrounding building conditions, underscoring the urgent need for action to ensure safe and dignified #housing for all. NEW: Check out our latest project, "The Tenant Trap," a yearlong investigation into the unfair treatment of thousands of Chicago renters living in unsafe and decaying apartments while facing skyrocketing rents and a court system designed to protect the rights of landlords first. The five-part series follows groups of tenants as they try to fight for better housing conditions, only to find the courts requiring them to live up to their end of the lease contract while allowing landlords to use loopholes, delays, and excuses to avoid laws designed to make living conditions safe and habitable. https://lnkd.in/gJ3WYutV

Here is an interesting comment section.
Burlington, Vermont City Council voted 12-0 yesterday to adopt a new "Neighborhood Code" allowing a broad array of missing-middle housing types on lots across the City. The City already eliminated minimum parking requirements in 2023. https://lnkd.in/gzMM_DsN

Quite an improvement over the existing standards! this will allow innovative land management solutions to existing social problems and a wealth of dissimilar neighborhood structures which can become a strong foundation for identity formation and neighborhood resilience in the face of sudden-onset natural hazard events.

Veteran Housing Corp says that IF YOU ARE NOT PART OF A PERMANENT AND LASTING SOLUTION TO THE AFFORDABLE HOUSING CRISIS AND HOMELESSNESS, YOU ARE THE PROBLEM! THE AFFORDABLE HOUSING INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX IS BROKEN AND NOT WORKING FOR AMERICAN TAXPAYERS Veteran Housing Corp would ask every TAXPAYER to demand and get answers from their elected and appointed government officials the below questions as they relate to any affordable, workforce, or supportive housing project in your community! 1. How much local, state, and federal funding, tax credits, or other government benefits or incentives did the project receive? 2. What is the affordability period for each project? Is the affordability period permanent and in perpetuity? 3. What guarantees exist have your local, state, and federal government officials obtained in writing that rents will not go up or that tenants will not be displaced or evicted after the "affordability period expires? Every local, state, and federal housing authority and affordable or workforce housing stakeholder should adopt the State of Vermont's "permanent affordability" policy as a model for all future government funded or subsidized housing projects or developments, no exceptions! https://lnkd.in/eFEUC8c8 Additionally, local, state and federal housing agencies should look to the Helsinki, FINLAND MODEL of ending homelessness by providing affordable housing for all 'It’s a miracle': Helsinki's radical solution to homelessness https://lnkd.in/er9HZSQU Even the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development AGREES THAT adopting FINLAND'S MODEL OF ERADICATING HOMELESSNESS may be of great value to resolving the affordable housing and homelessness crises in America https://lnkd.in/gkSZWYRU

Internal emails from Connecticut's Department of Housing reveal deep divisions among top officials over a proposed zoning reform policy known as "fair share." The emails, obtained by The Connecticut Mirror, reveal a stark contrast between the views of Democratic lawmakers and those of DOH officials. While lawmakers see fair share as a solution to Connecticut's housing crisis, DOH officials argue that the policy is unfair and would impose a one-size-fits-all approach on towns. #fairshare #connecticuthousing #zoningreform

Only four more days to comment on “Reducing Barriers to HUD-Assisted Housing,” HUD’s proposed rule to prevent people from being automatically denied federal housing assistance from HUD simply for having a criminal record, having a very old record, or a record for conduct that is irrelevant to health, safety, and the peaceful enjoyment of housing by other residents. The proposed rule would require HUD-assisted housing providers to conduct an individualized review of applicants, taking into consideration mitigating circumstances and factors before making an admissions decision. Public comment is open until June 10. https://lnkd.in/eTetGJiX

Read Texas Housers’ comments on HUD’s Proposed Rule ‘Reducing Barriers to HUD-Assisted Housing’ - Texas Housers has issued its comment on HUD’s Proposed Rule “Reducing Barriers to HUD-Assisted Housing.” The proposed rule intends to update HUD’s tenant screening regulations to confer additional fairness and protections against unnecessary denials for individuals with histories of involvement with the criminal-legal system. Often, there are unnecessary barriers to accessing housing for people impacted by the criminal-legal system, and HUD is working to reduce those barriers for certain forms of HUD-assisted housing through this proposed rule. Some of the notable regulatory changes included in the proposed rule are: We would like to thank all of our organizational partners and […] https://lnkd.in/gQDmnxqT

FYI, California city attorneys, county counsel, and housing authorities! "Equal access to housing without discrimination based on race, ethnicity, ancestry, source of income, or other unlawful factors is fundamental to the achievement of equality and justice in our Nation and our State. In keeping with these fundamental principles, through the Racial Justice Bureau in the Civil Rights Enforcement Section of the California Department of Justice, and its participation in the California Department of Justice’s Housing Justice Team, I write to emphasize local jurisdictions’ obligations under federal and state law to ensure equal access to housing with regard to so-called 'crime-free housing' ordinances or programs." https://lnkd.in/g7UV8dTy

It's no secret that CWA and CES are large proponents of strategies and policies that support affordable housing. This is why we are pleased to share the following article from Planetizen that discusses "a proposed rule from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) (that) would make permanent a pandemic-era regulation governing affordable housing residents at risk of eviction." "The rule would mandate a 30-day notification period for evictions for rent nonpayment." This is especially important as individual states have differing policies in place that require much less notification time. According to HUD, the State of Michigan "provides tenants with an eviction notice seven days or less before eviction."
