U.S. volume of all avocados (imports and U.S. Production) have grown more than 66% in 10 years. #Mexico accounted for 82.2% of all avocado's volume in 2023, with the balance supplied by #California, #Peru, #DominicanRepublic, #Colombia, and Florida. In the first semester of 2024 Colombia growing 209%.   Source: USDA & Agtools

While it’s an intriguing notion, let's clarify the reality behind this practice: 𝘏𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘹𝘵: Some Wagyu producers in Japan have indeed used beer as part of their feeding regimen. The primary goal was to stimulate the cattle’s appetite during periods of reduced feed intake. However, this practice is not universal among all Wagyu producers. 𝘊𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘭 𝘗𝘦𝘳𝘤𝘦𝘱𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯: The luxurious reputation of Wagyu beef has led to the popularization of certain care practices, such as beer-feeding. These stories, while interesting, often get exaggerated and don’t necessarily reflect the standard practices across all producers. 𝘔𝘢𝘳𝘬𝘦𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘐𝘯𝘧𝘭𝘶𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦: Media and marketing have played a role in amplifying the beer-feeding myth. The sensationalized narrative adds to the allure of Wagyu beef but doesn’t always represent the full picture. 𝘛𝘳𝘶𝘦 𝘘𝘶𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘋𝘳𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴: The exceptional quality of Wagyu beef is primarily attributed to the breed’s genetic heritage, meticulous feeding practices, and overall care. While beer might be used in some cases, it’s a small part of a broader approach focused on ensuring premium meat. Understanding these aspects helps us appreciate the true craftsmanship behind Wagyu beef and separates fact from fiction. That’s alot of guac…. Mexico supplies about 81% of the avocados eaten in the U.S. In 2023, the total value of U.S. imports of avocados from Mexico was about $2.5 billion, according to the USDA. Last year, over 6,000 truckloads of avocados were imported to the U.S. in the weeks prior to the Super Bowl. More than 90% of avocado imports from Mexico cross into the U.S. through Texas ports of entry in Laredo and Pharr.

This avocado season is unfolding uniquely according to our latest #MarketUpdate!🥑 California has already harvested about 150 million pounds of avocados, putting the industry about a month ahead of its usual schedule due to weather and market conditions. The market has seen heavy supplies from California, which has lessened the impact of the reduced Mexican fruit availability compared to previous seasons. The Loca crop is expected to start in July and is projected to be slightly below average. High temperatures in Mexico may result in a slow start to the new crop and smaller-sized avocados. Peru is expected to have its first major avocado arrivals in the first week of June. However, the crop is 25 to 30% smaller than usual this year. Despite this, a strong but brief season is anticipated, with ample supplies expected through July and into part of August. These are gorgeous avocados, right? They come from PRAGOR, an organic, Fairtrade co-op in Michoacán, Mexico. PRAGOR was established in 2005, but members re-organized in 2010 to control the avocado-selling process. This means they went from growing and harvesting avocados to growing, harvesting, AND exporting avocados. Part of the export process entails categorizing the fruits by quality. Category I avocados are the crème de la crème: mature, but not overripe. Clean, well-formed, good coloring. Absolutely and totally free from any and all damage. Able to garner the highest price. And guess what? When PRAGOR was selling to multinational companies, they were told that 40-50% of PRAGOR avocados qualified as Category I. But once PRAGOR made the switch to manage this task themselves? They learned that between 85 and 90% of their avocados merited Category I designation. Fairtrade exists because trade-as-usual isn’t fair.
