I hear Mexican grown avocados are currently getting around $US40 ($AD60+) per tray into Japan. This is a seriously impressive price, and Mexican growers would be cleaning up, so to speak. What a pity then that QLD avocados, which I would hazard a guess are much better quality than Mexican grown product, cannot be exported to Japan. If they could, QLD avo growers would be doing a lot better than the current domestic $1 to $1.50 retail price. A major economic and trade opportunity is being missed here. If it was Australian wine, meat, grain and lobster missing out on such an opportunity, I've no doubt it would be given top priority by government. Time to give QLD avocado growers a fair go.
