New study from UCLA explores how wildfire smoke exposure affects people over the long-term based on data from 2008-2018. Researchers found that 52,500 - 55,700 premature deaths in California were attributable to inhaling wildfire-related fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in those 11 years. Their estimates are higher than previous analyses that focused on short-term outcomes, highlighting wildfire smoke's impact on long-term disease. Congratulations to Barbara Lee, Ph.D., and Matthew Keifer, M.D., M.P.H., who contributed a chapter titled “Rural and Agricultural Environments” to the recently published second edition of the Textbook of Children's Environmental Health (Oxford University Press). The book has been thoroughly updated and revised to reflect the tremendous changes that have occurred in the field during the 10 years since the previous edition. I’m tired of seeing scare tactics on social media to promote engagement and sell supplements. The functional medicine world is definitely guilty of this. The fear mongering, as it relates to environmental health, has got to stop. How does one heal if they see their entire world as a threat? I believe there is another approach to environmental health that is much more empowering.
