Strengthening Readiness and Interoperability in the Indo-Pacific! Insightful article on "Generating Readiness, Interoperability in Indo-Pacific through Operation Pathways." Happy birthday to Colonel John Boyd, USAF, the military genius that many have never heard of! I first learned of Colonel Boyd… born 1/23/27, while in the Marine Corps. His signature decision making model… the OODA LOOP is required learning. OODA stands for - Observe/Orient/Decide/Act It is called a loop to underscore the continuous nature of decision-making in dynamic, competitive environments. It has served me well in my civilian career as the concepts translate over well from battlefield to boardroom. At a high level, the steps of this process are to: Observe: Gain situational awareness via all your senses Orient: Contextualize what you observe based on everything you know Decide: Formulate the optimal course of action Act: Execute on your decision without delay In a dynamic environment your actions will change the situation, requiring another loop of OODA till the competition is over. OODA on a grand scale… The Marines’ “Left Hook” during Desert Storm. Often referred to as “the first CNN war,” Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm showcased the U.S. military’s ability to extend its global reach and employ overwhelming firepower to neutralize an enemy’s centers of gravity. The U.S.-led coalition campaign was designed to first build up forces in the Gulf (Desert Shield) and then drive Saddam’s forces from neighboring Kuwait (Desert Storm). During the run up to Desert Storm, Secretary of Defense Dick Cheney consulted one of his favorite military strategists, John Boyd. Cheney regularly met with Boyd, where Boyd developed “a version of the von Schlieffen plan” of World War I. Boyd was intimately familiar with the concept of strategic envelopment; he used his vast knowledge of history to inform his strategic advice to the DOD. Desert Storm’s “left hook” was both literal and metaphorical. From an operational perspective, the U.S. and coalition forces’ rally through Iraq’s western desert provinces was unexpected. Saddam’s military was prepared to fight “force on force” in northern Kuwait where U.S. Marines feinted an amphibious assault on the coast. In bypassing the Iraqi Army via a large, overwhelming envelopment up through Saudi Arabia and into Iraq’s western desert, the operational move was both a “left hook” in the literal sense, but also a metaphorical “left hook” in that it was an evasive and perfectly-timed plot. There are too many achievements to list… In addition to OODA, Boyd was the father of the F-15, the F-16, and the F-18. His methods in recruiting his “Fighter Mafia” of aircraft developers is legendary. America has dominated the skies for the past 40+ years because of John Boyd. Requiescat in pace and Semper Fi!
