One of the biggest challenges of any RCM partnership is creating seamless integration. Before onboarding, you and your RCM partner need to create clarity with a Standard Operating Protocol (SOP). Which areas of your EMR will your RCM partner interface with? And which will require your approval for changes? Taking these proactive steps will help increase the throughput of claims and expedite financial inflows. Every specialty, from cardiology to surgery centers, has its own ecosystem. Over the 2022-23 academic year, our senior design team collaborated with medical professionals to address unmet clinical needs. CRNA Jane Swing, from the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), identified a critical issue in monitored anesthesia care (MAC) cases. Hypoxemia affects over 3 million surgical patients annually, highlighting the need for innovative solutions. Enter AnesthEZ, a foam pillow with a rigid set of arms designed to enhance patient oxygen saturation levels during surgery by proactively positioning the neck and mandible. This design prevents hypoxemia and aims to reduce postoperative complication rates, ultimately improving patient outcomes. AnesthEZ's adjustable mandible and jaw holders offer a practical and effective approach compared to manual methods, potentially revolutionizing airway patency maintenance in clinical settings. We A Personal Reflection on a Life-Changing Surgery I've witnessed the remarkable capabilities of modern medicine to change lives. Today, I want to share a story that stays with me, not just as a professional triumph but as a profound human experience. Years ago, a young father with advanced heart failure was referred to me. His condition was deteriorating rapidly, and while he was on the transplant list, time was not on his side. After thorough evaluation, we decided to proceed with an artificial heart implant as a bridge to transplant—a decision fraught with complexity and risk, but driven by hope and necessity. The surgery presented numerous challenges, but we were successful. However, the moment that truly encapsulates the power of this technology wasn't in the OR. It was weeks later, seeing him walk down the hospital corridor, hand in hand with his young daughter and wife. The awe and gratitude in their eyes, and the realization of the time given back to this family, underscored the profound impact of our work. This case exemplifies why we, as medical professionals, embrace the stress and long hours. It's about more than just the technology or the surgical skill; it's about the lives we touch and the futures we help secure. Years later, receiving updates on this patient's family milestones continues to remind me of the ripple effect of our decisions and actions.
