The interdisciplinary dialogue between architecture and social sciences is thus vital in understanding our built environments, their past, present and futures. This talk delves into understanding the symbiotic relationship between the disciplines of architecture and social sciences, exploring how architectural theory and practice intersect with social science methodologies. It emphasizes on the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to spatial explorations to provide a more cohesive and deeper understanding of communities and culture.

[HKIA Journal | Issue 79: Community] How Can We Understand the Impact of Co-Design? Kar Him Mo / Yidan Gong / Danyang Lei Urban regeneration in Hong Kong is being discussed due to ageing and dilapidation of the built environment. Unlike new projects or development areas, urban regeneration requires careful consideration of residents’ established living patterns, social assets and resources. Architects and urban planners/designers not only need to address issues of the physical environment but also the “software” in terms of social support and services. It often requires community participation and empowerment through broader stakeholder engagement in co-design processes. This article explores an alternative co-design impact evaluation method based on the Theory of Change with an ethnographic approach. The study aims to provide inspiration, insights and practical considerations for design professionals in the field of community design. Minimal Grammar CHAPTER 1.3: ARCHITECTURE AND PSYCHOLOGY The effect of space on the human psychological state is de facto evident. Depending on specific needs, space can stimulate productivity, relaxation, interaction, etc. For example, a space with plenty of natural light and open vistas often evokes a sense of expansiveness and freedom, while well-designed enclosed spaces can provide a feeling of security and intimacy. Both fulfil the task of a “study”, but depending on the preferences and character of the user, the choice is radically different. The psychology of space deals with the concepts of privacy and social interaction. Like private and public personas, the balance between openness and closedness is a significant factor in creating thoughtful environments. The balance between opposing sides of the same set is a relationship that the architect strives for. Architecture becomes a formative medium that responds to our mental needs, inviting us to connect with space on a level that transcends physical dimensions and seeks overlaps with metaphysical laws. Architecture and the psychology of space are closely intertwined, making our homes, workplaces, and public spaces reflect our emotional contents, our historicity, our tendencies, human creativity, and ultimately divine principles. Architecture Senior Emily Simms' Research Featured at Fall 2024 Symposium Emily's project, Thresholds of Healing: Rethinking Inpatient Mental Health Facility Design , focuses on the proposed Tax Allocation District (TAD) along Martha Berry Boulevard in Rome, Georgia. This district is slated for redevelopment of blighted areas, including motels that have been a hot spot for criminal activity in the area. A new long-term facility is proposed within the Tax Allocation District that blends the community of Rome within the threshold of the facility, as well as designing patient rooms and day rooms. Beyond the physical structures themselves, I examined the sociopolitical context that shaped the architectural landscape of the time. By understanding the motivations, societal impact, and ethical implications of Nazi architecture, we can gain valuable insights into the power of design and its influence on society. While confronting the dark history of the Nazi era, it is crucial to approach this subject with sensitivity, condemning the abhorrent ideology that fueled its existence.
