Apart from the apparent violation of wiretapping law (and, who knows how many others) this demonstrates how public our private lives are becoming; and how privacy and cybersecurity issues are looming large across an ever increasing app and device landscape. 200,000 YouTube creators were targeted in a highly sophisticated phishing scam. Influencers now receive a constant flood of collaboration offers via email and direct messages from brands and organizations of all sizes. Scams like this reduce the likelihood of creators responding to random offers and underscore the importance of trusted agencies and platforms (like People First) that have earned the confidence of tens of thousands of creators by offering diverse, vetted campaign opportunities. We want participants on both sides of the market—creators and sponsors—to feel confident they are engaging in a legitimate, transparent process. Creators won’t trust just anyone who approaches them, and brands should be equally selective in choosing partners to execute their campaigns.
