The Pursuit: à moins que vous n’ayez visé la perfection, vous ne pouvez pas tomber dans l’excellent. - unknown Unless you've strived for perfection, you can't fall into the excellent. Have you noticed that most websites do not list a phone number to call? META, a.k.a. Facebook is at the top of the list. If you do find a phone number for any service then you are forced to go through a tedious and tortuous phone menu that, more than likely, does not have the option pertinent to your question. Atop that, many times you are forced to speak to an A.I. assistant that does not recognize your voice. By the time you get to speak to a human being, you are either stressed and tired or very agitated. Where is customer service? Maybe the question should be, What is customer service? Excellence of or in anything it seems is a rarity. The efforts to achieve it are no longer efficient. Such goes beyond the point of diminishing returns. That, I feel is the environment we live in. When we are in need, there are few opportunities to be wowed by the activities or services given by others. I live in Austin, Texas, the "Live Music Capital of the World." Seven days a week, there are live performances of musicians who have only one goal in mind, to be their best for you. Every song, whether their own or a cover, played is a display of their passion and attentiveness to the craft they have chosen to make a living, music. They ask only one thing, enjoy. For nearly four years, I have driven throughout the greater Austin area to photograph these amazing people. I started a website, written three books, and have started a magazine so that I can tell their story. They are a service that never fails to deliver. Local live music is good medicine. At least one night a week, you need to venture out of your home and go to see and hear the local talent in your area. Skip the big named concerts and see performances, locally, that are very entertaining for a fraction of the cost. Experience excellence by attending. They will not let you down. One Would Have Thought That in 2024, the Music Industry Would Have Grown Up and Stopped Being a Den of Iniquity Despite the progress and global reach of music, the industry continues to reveal deep flaws. Beyoncé, for example, was completely snubbed at the 2024 Country Music Awards, despite her album Cowboy Carter topping the country charts. This exclusion highlights a larger issue of systemic gatekeeping within country music, where Black artists are often overlooked, regardless of their success. Many hoped Beyoncé’s album, which sought to reclaim the genre’s Black roots, would open doors, but the industry continues to resist true inclusivity. Similarly, Tyla, a South African artist, won Best African Music Performance at the 2024 Grammy Awards, even though her music is closer to amapiano and Afro-pop, not Afrobeat. This misclassification mirrors past missteps, like awarding The Police as a reggae group when Bob Marley was around. Such decisions not only show a lack of understanding but also insult the artists truly defining those genres. Lastly, nepotism remains a glaring issue in major labels. Damien Lucien’s appointment as president of Atlantic Records—mainly due to being the son of Lucian Grainge, CEO of Universal Music—exemplifies this. His rapid rise, despite limited experience, underscores how connections often take precedence over talent or hard work.
