We are have some exciting apprentice opportunities. We are looking for an apprentice to provide support to our Safety, Health, Environment and Quality (SHEQ) Manager whilst working towards a Level 3 Safety, Health and Environment Apprenticeship qualification. The majority of your time will be spent undertaking the following duties: · Provide administrative support to the SHEQ Manager in relation to all H&S documentation, including the creation and maintenance of project H&S folders. · Maintenance of the training matrix and booking courses. · Undertaking and keeping records of toolbox talks. · Assist in organising any medical related assessments for employees (for example, lung, hearing and skin assessments). · Assist with keeping company accreditations updated · Assist in carrying out risk assessments and method statements. · Carry out on-site inspections in relation to SHEQ related matters. · Investigating accidents, near misses and workplace hazards. We work on many construction sites in East Anglia and London and therefore a full UK driving licence would be beneficial. As well as an apprentice to work within our busy design department whilst undertaking an apprenticeship in Engineering Design and Draughting Level 3. You will learn to produce plans, elevations and sections using AutoCAD software in line with Architects and Engineers designs and specifications and will gain an understanding of the entire construction process following completion of design. You must have a keen interest in construction, specifically in the architectural aluminium/structural glazing field, and have a genuine interest in technology or design. Strong mathematical skills and an ability to demonstrate strong attention to detail are essential. 20% of your time will be spent undertaking off the job learning. This includes online lessons with the apprenticeship provider, undertaking guided learning and a preparing a range of assignments. You must have 5 GCSEs at Grade A-C/4-9 including English and Maths. A GCSE in a construction or design related field would also be beneficial although is not essential to be considered for this role. For more information please email hr@jpjltd.co.uk

There's a famous story in my family when my dad first started his contracting business in Long Island, New York. He had a customer ask him to pour a new concrete sidewalk, which my father had never done before. He had seen so many concrete workers do it before on-site, so it seemed like even a kid could do it. He planned the whole job, ordered the concrete, and assembled the tools necessary to complete the work. When the concrete truck arrived, it started pouring the concrete into the forms and work was going smoothly. As my dad started to smooth the concrete, things started going terribly wrong. He noticed that the concrete didn't have the consistency of normal concrete. It was full of big rocks and chunks, and was drying ridiculously quick!! As he panicked to try and smooth the concrete faster, he watched as it dried into the clumpiest, most uneven, raggity sidewalk you've ever seen in your life. Little did my father know, that he was doomed from the start. The concrete from the concrete truck was past its due date and had started drying before my father even started placing it. He eventually had to rip out the slab, and place a new one, all at his expense. The lesson: every project has its "unknowables". These are things that you don't even realize you're missing because you think you have it all figured out. By adopting a learning mindset ("I have a lot to learn about this process still"), it allows you to open the door towards learning these things, seeking answers from experienced professionals, and getting it right the first time. So easy even a kid could do it, huh?

This kid is amazing, well done. Also, this for me is a great reminder why our education is so flawed in America. Why not have trade skills taught in school? Why not teach financial literacy? Why not teach sales? I am almost 30 years removed from high school and I am sure curriculum has changed but wasting valuable, formative years on things that bore kids to death might not be the best way to excite kids to go to school. #careerdevelopment #education #skillsets

I contact construction businesses on a weekly basis to help our learners into work. We've trained 88 CSCS card holders this year alone. Ranging from 18 year old new learners to experienced trades, we help those people obtain, pay for and utilize green CSCS labourers cards. I'll be honest, most construction employers aren't forthcoming when I contact them about our learners. I'm sure one of the reasons for this is that the employers that could benefit most from us are the smaller ones and they're busy on-site rather than having time for recruitment. I'm sure there's a way that we can help signpost more learners into work if we can find a way to communicate at the right time, in the right way, with the right people. Skilled laborers and tradesmen are leaving the workforce faster than new hires can replace them, causing many construction and home improvement companies to scramble for professionals.
