A roadmap for recycling packaging in my home state of Colorado is underway! How do brands and retailers do their part? Always design against the ‘current recycling system’. Those that start now will avoid the fees associated with EPR (Extended Producer Responsibility). Those that don’t comply will help excellerate the process to advancenent of the future state. When dealing with recycling, the journey is part of the experience—an expression of the seriousness of one’s intent. 📦

Businesses can qualify for funding from the state for purchasing equipment that increases the diversion of materials in their operation. Our Director of Services, Dr Anna Scott, has been nominated for the Resource Hot 100 for her work moving people beyond just recycling to waste prevention. Most people are not extensively engaged in waste prevention behaviours and think that recycling is the best thing they can do to reduce the environmental impact of the things they buy. Designing better, insight-led communications, that increase understanding of waste prevention, is an essential part of encouraging the uptake of these behaviours. Earlier this year, and led by Anna, we published 'A Guide to Improving Public Understanding of Waste Prevention' - research which explored how to communicate with people effectively about waste prevention to help move them up the waste hierarchy. The National Recycling Database (https://lnkd.in/g8gaYCn5) provides updated insights into what materials are accepted in recycling programs across the U.S., helping improve packaging design, policy, and recycling efficiency. With harmonization of definitions and more clarity about the key differences in recycling acceptance, the data will help to better inform how GreenBlue Org's How2Recycle® (H2R) communicates the recyclability of packaging to consumers - often a huge point of confusion and one our team at ecomaine puts thousands of hours each year into educating our communities about.
