Guiding Principles for #Sustainable Solar PV Systems in #Ethiopia’s Social Institutions (SIs) Under Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, Energising Development (EnDev) project, MicroEnergy International developed a comprehensive framework to enhance the #sustainability of photovoltaic (PV) power systems in #Ethiopia's social institutions. This #framework provides key guiding principles that address critical aspects like: -#Policy and #legal structures -#Organizational and administrative best practices -#Business models and financial planning -#Technological standards -#Environmental and social impacts Rather than a one-size-fits-all solution, this framework offers adaptable principles covering all essential processes—from planning and equipment selection to installation, maintenance, and eventual replacement. It draws from global best practices, in-depth studies of local PV systems, and insights from solar electrification initiatives in Ethiopia. The Ethiopian government is targeting universal electrification by 2025 through NEP 2.0, boosting Solar Stand-alone Systems in remote areas. However, rural social institutions still face challenges in accessing reliable solar PV systems. To tackle this, under Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, Energising Development (EnDev) project, MicroEnergy International developed a comprehensive Sustainability Framework for the provision, operation, maintenance, and end-of-life management of these systems. The project began with a detailed Baseline Study, covering crucial topics such as the target audience of the framework, definition and dimensions of sustainability of decentralized electrification of social institutions with PV systems, and key principles and approaches for sustainable off-grid solar PV electrification of social institutions. This includes integrated participatory and need-based planning, design principles, procurement concepts and tenders, installation work, sustainable operation and maintenance, and end-of-life management and system replacement. The baseline study includes practical guides like "How to size a Stand-alone Solar System?" and a helpful checklist. Reliable energy is about to transform lives in Congo’s Sud-Ubangi province. ⚡🌍 In a region where 97% of people lack electricity, families and businesses rely on harmful energy sources like wood and diesel. This dependence not only harms the environment but also limits economic growth and quality of life. That’s about to change. The development of a 1.5 MW hydroelectric power plant and a smart electricity grid has the potential to deliver clean, affordable energy to 5,000 households, 175 businesses, 4 hospitals, and 20 schools. Led by byNubian, and powered by Hydrobox, and Yetu Smart Grids, the project aims to avoid more than 10,000 tons of CO2 emissions annually while promoting local entrepreneurship—especially empowering women and young people. By reducing reliance on fossil fuels, this initiative is driving sustainable growth and a brighter future for these communities. ♻️💡 Discover more: https://lnkd.in/eUaVXQtS This project received funding from the Government of Flanders through the Flanders International Climate Action Programme, an initiative coordinated by G-STIC and Departement Omgeving. #RenewableEnergy #Hydropower #Congo #ClimateAction #SustainableDevelopment #SmartGrid #GreenEnergy Laurent Marlein Ward Goossenaerts Thomas Poelmans Rik Vereecken

Today we’re excited to launch the ESEDA (Ethiopian Solar Energy Development Association)’s 3-year strategic framework. Available here: https://lnkd.in/g-nJgsxP Power for All led the development of the strategy along with ESEDA and players across the #Ethiopian #solar sector – including policy makers, partners, financiers, and the private sector – the plan focuses on four core initiatives. 1/ Boosting Growth of the Association: Attracting top talent, expanding funding sources, and improving member benefits. 2/ Mobilizing Finance: Partnering with banks and lobbying for enabling policies. 3/ Advancing Policy Advocacy: Engaging stakeholders, increasing awareness, and shaping government policy. 4/ Promoting Solar Industry: Enhancing capabilities, broadening markets, and encouraging partnerships. ESEDA will create a Task Force and three specialized working groups to create sustainable growth in the country’s solar sector. The strategic document was developed through the support received from the IKEA Foundation through Power for All’s Powering Agriculture: Ethiopia Project. Power for All is committed to support ESEDA in the execution of the strategy document. Together, our goal is to boost the adoption of distributed renewable energy (#DRE) and its productive use (#PUE) among smallholder farmers, which will strengthen Ethiopia's energy future. ethiopian ministry of water energy, Ministry of Irrigation and Lowlands (MILLs), Ministry of Agriculture, Ethiopia, Ministry of Finance, Ethiopia The World Bank, GOGLA, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, EWiEn :Ethiopian Women in Energy, Africa Minigrid Developers Association (AMDA) Africa Minigrids Program, AFSIA (Africa Solar Industry Association) Ethiopian Energy and Power Business Portal #EndEnergyPovertyFaster #PoweringAgriculture #SDG7 #SDG2
