DeliverThat story. Sometimes, DSPs can learn from restaurant grit. We had a call in May with a company in the process of launching a catering website. They have a few concepts but no delivery need. An email Saturday -- one of their companies needs help with delivery Monday. We have an API, database.... an onboarding process. A dozen reasons we need to do this by the book and can't help Monday. I went old school and manually created the delivery in our system, trusting the team. The engineers could get things backlogged, and our support team & drivers would handle the 22-mile delivery, right? After my manual upload and a message to the team, I forgot about it. It went well (photo). Since Monday, we have taken 3 caterings a day with the one concept. Plans to take more with their others. Sometimes, DSPs need to take a page from the restaurant playbook and do whatever it takes. Call at 5 pm for a large order tomorrow? Let me grab my pen. #DeliveringMore

"I want it now!" Did you recognize yourself? A lot of people are in such a rush - which is totally understandable, in the world where time is the most valuable resource which sometimes just slips away, everyone wants their goal to already be achieved, and they want all those cars, houses and other stuff be there "by yesterday". However, not everything gets to you in a minute (I have a wild theory about it, but that's a topic for another post).  Think about it - when you are at the restaurant, and you order a gourmet dish - do you get it the split second you order it? Well, if you are in a restaurant like McDonald's (no shade to Mcdonald's, I love cheeseburgers there), you might get what you want, because they might have it just lying there "in stock". But if you are in a 5-star restaurant - your order will be given to the best chef to cook it, and after some time, you will get the dish so good I will not even describe it because I'm going to get hungry if I start writing about its taste and smell and texture. Oh my. Another thing - you are NOT worried about the dish you ordered - after all, you trust the chef to cook it the best way and the waiter to deliver it to you, so you are just doing your thing, calmly, knowing that what you want is on the way. Get it? Knowing that what you want is on the way. Calmly. Now, I'm definitely not saying that you should just do nothing and wait. Remember that story where the man wanted to win the lottery, and he was praying to God, and God said: "Man, at least go and buy the lottery ticket". Intention + Aligned Action. I think this is the key. You know what you want (which is another cool topic to talk about), and you do things that will lead you to what you want. You want to be a YouTuber? You know you're gonna be one. That's an intention.  What about action? You show up, for yourself, make videos, watch tutorials, you act. Every day. Your intention is the chef in the restaurant, that knows exactly what you want, and "cooks" it. Your aligned action is the waiter who delivers this "dish" to you. Man I'm hungry, gotta get a cheeseburger. #writingjourney

Are you watching The Bear? 🐻     In one scene (mini spoiler alert) from the latest season, Chef Carmy is trying to impress the vile head chef with a new dish.   The head chef peers at it and releases a stream of expletives:   ‘What the hell is this *^&%? There’s way too many components. You wanna add another *&^%ing sauce, huh? Do you?’   And he writes down one word on a sticky note:   SUBTRACT   ‘That’s how you get better.’   We should all have the word ‘subtract’ on a sticky note somewhere. Possibly tattooed on our knuckles too. 👊     You know already less is more in an email. Shorter is sweeter. But sometimes it’s not just about taking out words.   It’s about subtracting ideas too. 💡   Our audience can only consume so much at a time. IT'S A BUFFET Went to a buffet and I noticed something interesting. There was a 90-minute time limit for each table. The moment we reached our seats, I ran to one section, grabbed samples of some food, and returned to consume them, before dashing off to repeat the process. As I gobbled up the 4th cycle of food, my friend returned with one piece of a few dishes across different sections. Only after she had completed her plate, did she repeat the process. The table beside us was interesting. After the couple had returned from gathering all their food from all the sections, only did they then consumed the food. Never once did they get up from their seats before leaving the buffet. The point of this observation got me thinking about life and how there is no one way to do something. Pick and choose what you can do and how fast you can do it. And similar to life, with the time given to us, it's ultimately up to you, how you want to use it. Deployment of Spark: cluster vs. client modes. If the restaurant cooks for you, it is the cluster mode. You assign your order to a restaurant (the driver and creates context) and let them process (cooks/executors) if for you. If you (the driver and creates context) are cooking at home with your children, then it is client mode. The moment you leave the kitchen, cooking will stop. This also applies if your children reside away and have called you for help with cooking instructions. If you drop the phone, then their cooking will also stop. Where does the driver reside? That is the key input to decide the type of deployment. #spark #dataengineering #dataengineer
