VRF/VRV (Variable Refrigerant Flow/Variable Refrigerant Volume) The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly: The Good: As an HVAC technician that leans heavily on the technical side, the security of my career seems as solid as that of a mortician. These systems require technicians that are fluent in mechanical, electrical and control systems. However, while I have received advanced factory service training from multiple manufacturers, I am not yet a bona fide expert on any of them. The Bad: When it breaks, it's broke. There is no "jumping it out" to get it running temporarily until the parts are delivered. While the mechanical and electrical portions of VRF systems across the major manufacturers are similar, the controls, protocols and troubleshooting procedures are very different. As you already know, these systems require a top notch installation. Let's face it, it's the type of "top notch" installation that you do NOT have. Why? Because pipe fitting is hard work often done in less than desirable work environments (freezing temps/buildings not yet dried in/hot rooftops, etc.). With a few minor exceptions, the best workers find better work. They move on to things that are easier on their back. The "new guys" are the ones installing 60-80% of your piping. The Ugly: Your local VRF representative likely has a SINGLE competent service technician covering your quadrant of the country. The others are fillers. They show up with their tool bags, check for the most common problems and tell you what your building engineers and in-house technicians already told you. The hard truth is that the Roman Baughs of the world are very few and far between. If you are a building owner with tenants screaming at you, you are at the mercy of your representative to send you that one technician that everyone else is screaming for. SUMMARY: As a technician that thinks like an engineer, I absolutely love the advanced technology and the efficiency of VRF/VRV. It is a perpetual novelty. As a VRF aficionado and consultant, I’ve made $$$$ off problem projects. I would agree with your assessment to a degree. IMO, your post is an indictment on the part of the mechanical contractor, their patterns and practices, and the American HVAC installation technician. Here are the charges: Count 1: Not Reading the manual Count 2: Not asking questions Count 3: Not appreciating the differences in VRF technology Count 4: Remaining in a state of incuriousness Count 5: Not being able to follow instructions Count 6: Complaining about VRF technology because it’s too hard Count 7: Being afflicted by the Dunning-Kruger Effect simplex 10. Count 8: Not networking to find friends in the VRF community There are tens of millions of VRF systems around the world being installed correctly in third world countries whose installers do not have the benefits that Americans have.

While Jordan Day is commenting on commericial VRF systems pros and cons, these also apply to residential applications and electrification too. It's worth a quick read. If you are pushing electrification, please understand that some in the HVAC industry are asking to pump the brakes, mot because we like fossil fuels, but because we actually understand the state of contractors in the industry you are a newcomer in. A retooling is happening but not fast enough for the enthusiasm, incentives funding and political hysteria behind heat pumps lately.

Unfortunately many building owners are going to find this out the hard way. The other issue is leakage. There are miles of refrigerant tubing in a large building with many connections so the possibility of a leak is imminent. Contractors do not spend the time to do an adequate leak test duration and vacuum so it is certain at some point you will be low on gas. You can't just find the leak and top up the charge. All the refrigerant must be evacuated and recycled by the factory. It's a two part gas and the leak will leak out the smaller part most so the charge is not usable.
