“Americans are at their best when they can talk with another, disagree, even argue, but agree to keep the dialogue going. Unfortunately, too many people feel today like they can’t do that, and they have to avoid even speaking to people with whom they disagree.” – Civility Project Last night, I attended a program sponsored by MSU Libraries and the MSU Alumni office, called the The Great Lakes Civility Project. It was a discussion between two journalists, Stephen Henderson, the editorial page editor for the Detroit Free Press, and Nolan Finley, the editorial page editor for the Detroit News. They are journalists with differing political views who have become friends. They lead in-person and virtual workshops at universities, schools, nonprofits, corporations, and religious institutions about how to talk to people with different beliefs than you. Here is a talk which was recorded by StoryCorps about their backgrounds and how that influences their political views. https://lnkd.in/ecezAZNG Listening was one skill they discussed: - Listening is not the same as not talking. - After your conversation partner is done speaking, you should be able to explain what the other person said and be ready to ask questions to help you understand their point of view - You should not spend your time listening preparing your rebuttal. I am going to focus on this tip about listening in the coming weeks at work, home, in my community, and see what I can learn. You can learn more about the Civility Project, watch recordings of their “Civility Sessions,” or sign up for their newsletter at https://lnkd.in/exCm5kVi

Hear Jason Brennan of Georgetown University as he explains the historical context of political discord and the role of expertise in an era where trusted figures become polarizing symbols. He and host Gregory LaBlanc also scrutinize the influence of political factions and social signaling, the curious ways in which political interests align across different cultures, and whether deliberation in democracy genuinely elevates decision-making or merely intensifies division. 🎙️ Just wrapped up a powerful interview with Josiah O'Neil, the founder of the nonprofit organization Defining Truth, and the author of the impactful new book "Defining Truth." In this episode of "It is Time to Stand Up," Josiah shares his insights on the vital importance of understanding and defending truth in today's society, based on his 20 years of experience in government, the military, law enforcement, and running for Congress. 🔍 Key Takeaways: 1. **Equipping Yourself**: Josiah emphasizes the critical role of understanding logic and reasoning to engage in meaningful conversations about truth and values. Preparation is key to defending truth effectively. 2. **Local Engagement**: Whether it's attending school board meetings, participating in local elections, or voicing concerns to elected officials, every individual has a part to play in shaping their communities and the nation. 3. **Action through Education**: A significant message for young couples and parents. Ante up, educate yourselves, read reliable information, and embrace the responsibility to stand for truth and values that align with your beliefs and faith. The "Defining Truth" podcast and Josiah O'Neil's book are invaluable resources for gaining deeper insights into reclaiming truth in a culture that desperately needs it. I highly recommend checking out his work and joining the dialogue around essential societal topics. #TruthMatters #DefiningTruth #CultureWar #Podcast
