Quantum Announcement! … 2025 has been announced by the United Nations as the International Year of Quantum Science and Technologies. We knew it was coming but it’s so great to finally have the official announcement. This will celebrate the 100th year anniversary of the beginning of quantum and will serve to raise global awareness that we are now entering the second quantum revolution.
This public recognition from the United Nations of the importance of quantum technologies will provide the opportunity for awareness raising, education and action in this area across the globe. We live in a world of rising polarisation and extreme views of quantum hype and quantum skepticism exist. However, there is clearly a sensible and rational middle path we can walk.
Quantum technologies, especially in combination with AI and machine learning, have the power to radically impact our lives in so many positive ways and to bring shared benefits for all. Ensuring that we are guided always by the Global Sustainable Development Goals (the SDGs) and that we remember our ethics of compassion for all humanity and all species is paramount. This year is an opportunity to remind ourselves that technology is indisputably better utilised for peace than for conflict; that collaboration must balance with healthy and fair competition; and that any form of aggression damages trust and in turn damages our global community and all our futures. Every one of us has the ability to suffer and that fact should unite us. We must determinedly work to retain our powers of empathy and compassion for all others, even when they severely challenge us. Let that be our strongest message during the coming year of celebration.
United Nations proclaimed 2025 as the International Year of Quantum (IYQ)! On the 100th anniversary of foundational work (incl. by Born, Dirac, Heisenberg, and Schrödinger), quantum technologies are on the path to become transformative, practical, and ultimately common. I am honored to serve on the IYQ Steering Committee and work with UNESCO, American Physical Society, Optica, other QED-C members, and international partners. #IYQ is a fantastic opportunity to capture the public imagination and explore use cases of quantum technologies for the public good, including to advance the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. https://lnkd.in/gC56cA_J #quantum #quantumtechnology #quantumcomputing #SDGs
