Around 70% of global freshwater is stored in glaciers and ice sheets, making glaciers essential to the water supply of millions of people. Yet, these ice formations are rapidly retreating, affecting the water cycle, altering glacier melt, snowmelt, groundwater recharge, and contributing to sea level rise. On this #WorldDayForGlaciers, let’s protect these vital ecosystems we all depend on: https://lnkd.in/duc7zH8w #WorldGlaciersDay #IYGP #Glaciers2025

Glaciers are critical to life. When they disappear, the consequences are far-reaching. Around the world, glaciers store 70% of the world’s fresh water, providing a vital source for more than 2 billion people who rely on them for drinking water, food security, and livelihoods. For many indigenous communities, these frozen giants further hold cultural and spiritual significance. Yet, glaciers are increasingly under threat. As they are retreating at an alarming rate, we are witnessing exacerbating water scarcity, accelerating sea level rise, and heightening the risk of natural disasters such as floods and landslides. Today, 50 UNESCO #WorldHeritage sites are home to glaciers, but if current trends continue, glaciers are projected to vanish from 1/3 of these sites by 2050. Urgent action is needed to safeguard these vital ecosystems, as their disappearance will have lasting impacts on both people and the planet.
