In the 2020 presidential election, Midwestern states with the highest voter turnouts in the nation bordered states with the lowest voter turnout. The region turns out to be less predictable than expected, but why do these discrepancies happen in the first place? By Michelle Hwang for Midstory.

This year's Presidential Election will again come down to the role of a few SWING STATES. The Party of Trump is now working constantly in six key swing states (= the undemocratic byproduct of Electoral College politics). The GOP is trying hardest to SUPRESS votes in: Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Georgia, Arizona, and Nevada. To be sure, the Trump team will badly lose the POPULAR Vote count (again), but they know it's the Electoral count that matters. And please be advised: IF they see themselves losing the Electoral count, the Trump team has a sinister "backup plan" in the Constitution's 12th Amendment. Wherever Republicans now hold office as Secretaries of State or as election officials (particularly in the swing states), they will likely be following a national GOP contingency strategy to "create enough CHAOS & UNCERTAINTY" about any unfavorable election results. This will allow them the option of altogether avoiding the Electoral College system. They'll just cry foul, and NOT send their electors. When neither candidate can reach 270, they'll invoke the 12th. Our antiquated Constitution's 12th Amendment could offer Trump an alternate procedure - bypassing the Electoral College - in which each US state gets one vote, as directed by their state legislatures (most are Republican controlled). The proceeding would be conducted in the U.S. House of Representatives, likely in January 2025. Under this scenario, Trump would likely win 26-24. A 12th Amendment procedure was last used successfully to choose an unpopular President in 1876. We can be grateful to the ACLU and many democracy watchdogs in the USA. More vigilance is much needed! Election security in the U.S. is a priority at local, state, and federal levels. Measures include cybersecurity enhancements, voter registration database protections, and law enforcement task forces to address threats. Incidences of voter fraud are rare and often isolated, with no evidence of widespread fraud affecting election outcomes. It seems that the only individuals who do not accept election results are #republicans who loose elections. If #republicans loose, they allege fraud. I get it! Voter registration forms tend to be really densely packed and have to cover a variety of circumstances so they aren’t easy to fill out if you’re not familiar with them. Voter registration drives are so important, but they fail if the people running them aren’t reviewing the forms during the process. Local election officials are such a valuable resource here. More voter registration drives could benefit from reaching out to their local clerk and discussing things with them. Clerks are here to help! Make use of their knowledge!
