Last week, as President of Medicines for Europe I had the chance to participate in one of the panels of the High-level Conference on the Future EU Health Union. I am very impressed by the priority the Belgian Presidency of the EU Council is giving to Health, this is important for Europe, for the European patients and for the European industry. We had a very interesting discussion on the Voluntary Solidarity Mechanism and the EU Stockpiling Strategy. Did you know that the compulsory stockpiling of 6 months currently applicable in Germany for certain antibiotics equals the annual consumption of 10 Member States? How can we work together and coordinate for equal and on-time access for all European patients? #EU2024BE #genericmedicines #europe #medicinesforeurope

🩺 Today the Dutch Parliament will debate the Dutch Global Health Strategy. This strategy is the cornerstone of the Netherlands’ approach to global public health challenges. We, the Dutch Global Health Alliance, have been closely monitoring the development of this strategy. As a coalition of 20 civil society organizations, we call on the Dutch Parliament to fully endorse the strategy and give it the political and financial support it needs. We share several key asks and recommendations to strengthen the strategy: Increase non-Official Development Assistance contributions to the strategy. Develop a comprehensive implementation agenda with clear measurable qualitative and quantitative indicators. Put stringent conditions on government funding for pharmaceutical research, ensuring transparency and affordability. Ensure that public-private partnerships in healthcare are accompanied by robust regulations that safeguard equity and prioritize the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 3 on health. 🔗 Read our full position article here https://bit.ly/3VIvn5y #GlobalHealth #HealthForAll #DutchGlobalHealthAlliance

Yesterday, our Healthcare and Life Sciences team hosted an event titled ‘EU Health Union: building resilience in an age of permacrisis’ with Efthymios Costopoulos (Deputy Permanent Representative of Greece to the EU), Stelios Kympouropoulos (MEP, Greece), Olga Solomon (Head of Unit, DG SANTE) and moderated by our very own Dafni Kachrila Skouteli. #HealthUnion #PharmaPackage #Healthcare It was an open discussion on the lessons learned from the pandemic, the latest policy trends, and the future of EU health integration and priorities after the 2024 EU elections. A key takeaway is that the EU should now focus on the successful implementation of existing initiatives, supported by sufficient resources while keeping health high on the political agenda in the next mandate. In addition, as the negotiations on the EU pharma package unfold, it is important to maintain an open dialogue and find the right balance between innovation, competitiveness and patient access to affordable medicines.

We'll have a round table session on "The European Health Union we want - 2024 and beyond" Permanent Representation of Austria to the European Union in Brussels on 16 May 2024, from 16:00 to 17:30. By invitation only. Organised by the European Health Forum Gastein (EHFG) and the European Health Union initiative #EHUi under the auspices of the Austrian Federal Ministry of Social Affairs, Health, Care and Consumer Protection, this round table event will discuss participants' aspirations for a European Health Union. The COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the importance of coordinated actions for health protection in Europe. This emphasis on coordination extends to public health and healthcare more generally. Joint procurement and coordinated pandemic response have demonstrated that EU-wide actions in health are not only feasible but successful under the current EU legislation. This realisation created the concept of an EHU, which over the past years has evolved into covering diverse portfolios, from pandemic preparedness to Europe's Beating Cancer Plan and the reform of the pharmaceutical legislation. At the same time, civil society and other health actors have called for more structured and ambitious actions and a broader range of topics to be covered under the umbrella of the European Health Union. Access to medicine challenges in middle and low-income countries (MLICs) are multifaceted and can be attributed to various factors: Affordability, Intellectual Property Rights, Supply Chain Issues, Regulatory Barriers, Health System Challenges, Disease Burden and Prioritization, Political Will and Investment…. Addressing these challenges requires a comprehensive approach that involves collaboration between governments, international organizations, civil society, and the private sector. Strategies to improve access to medicines in MLICs include promoting generic competition, strengthening health systems, enhancing regulatory capacity, and advocating for policies that prioritize public health over commercial interests.
