🆕 #Eurohealth Special Issue: Advancing Cancer Control in Europe 🚨 #Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the WHO European Region and tackling it requires bold policies and innovative, comprehensive approaches. Today, the risk of developing #cancer before age 75 in the WHO European Region is 27%, while the risk of dying from cancer is 11.5%. The new issue highlights how the EU Mission on Cancer and #EUBeatingCancerPlan is working to reduce this growing health burden through policy innovation, research collaboration, and national implementation strategies. 💡 WHO/Europe’s article in this issue (page 7) emphasizes the urgent need for a health systems' approach to cancer control. Cancer is not only a medical challenge but is also influenced by social, commercial, and political determinants—inequalities in access to care, a vertical clinician-based approach, and vested interests shape cancer outcomes across the Region. ❗This can and should be changed. Read the latest issue and explore the future of cancer policies in Europe: https://bit.ly/3FDvCsJ

In the 1980s and 1990s, Iceland faced a significant problem with harmful drinking patterns among teenagers, with 42% of 15 and 16-year-olds reporting being drunk in the past 30 days. Bergþóra, a parent and advocate, was involved in the early stages of the movement that started in 1999 – later known as the Icelandic Model for reducing alcohol consumption. “The campaign was not only focused on alcohol”, Bergþóra explains. “It was showing there are better ways to have fun and connect." Efforts, driven by parents, schools, researchers and practitioners and government bodies, centred around increasing family time and expanding the social and physical activities available to Icelandic youth, particularly in the afternoons and evening. Nowadays, the 15 and 16-year-olds reporting being drunk in the past month dropped to only 5%. Iceland’s success in reducing youth alcohol consumption is a testament to strong policies and sustained community efforts.
