President and CEO of Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA)

The State of California is seeking an exemption from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to implement its Advanced Clean Cars II (ACC II) regulation that will ban the sale of internal combustion engines by 2035. If the EPA grants this exemption, roughly 140 million Americans living in 17 states that have followed all or part of California’s previous clean-car rules will lose their ability to choose what motor vehicle best suits the needs of their families. ACC II’s rush to mandate EVs will adversely impact thousands of specialty aftermarket businesses that make parts or components for ICE vehicles, which account for $17 billion in sales annually. I was proud to testify alongside SEMA members before the EPA in opposition to ACC II. SEMA has also rallied our members and automotive enthusiasts who have sent the EPA over 5,000 letters opposing California’s request for a waiver needed to implement ACC II. If you haven’t sent the EPA a letter opposing ACC II, click the link below to sign and personalize a letter outlining why this regulation should not be implemented. https://p2a.co/criacj9

Why does anyone still vote for the communist government in CA? It blows me away. You can't drive the car you want, you can't evict squatters in your own home, you can't work on your car in your driveway. Where is the Line? Perhaps it's time for CA to vote Republican?

Although I’m a proponent of EVs and the associated benefits in general, I don’t believe government mandates are the best way to increase adoption. I believe that the aftermarket can actually lead this particular transportation evolution because it’s the only industry that is positioned to realize near-term profit within the construct of current standards. It’s a two-sided billion dollar opportunity, more torque and horsepower than ICEs, AND lowet emissions that can exceed government standards. {Not to mention the only transportation you can “fuel at home”} The belief that politicians of any party are equipped to lead such a transformative space is misguided (or hubris). In this space, for this problem, only focused capitalists can outpace the guaranteed bureaucratic bumbling. In my view, EVs are not opposite of ICE cars, they are an evolution of transportation and both forms will exist for several more generations, might as well profit from both if you can.

Once you start taking American's rights away, chaos may ensue. I feel like it is how it was when Germany was split and Eastern Germans only had to chose from a Trabant. Let us choose what we want to drive. It is bad enough manuals are going away. I still refuse to buy anything with an automatic, but how long can I realistically do that. I can always convert anything to a manual, but that has become harder too.

I spent many decades in the auto parts trade, as well as enjoying the restoration of several collector cars. But, the times are a changing. Always have, and always will. I anticipate a great benefit to our world once we give up fossil fuels. Frankly, I don’t miss seeing horse poo in the middle of the streets, either. We still have collector cars, as well as horse drawn carriages. It is entirely possible to have regulations that make room for hobbyists while steering the vast majority of our transportation to non-ICE. I hope SEMA proactively leads the two-path solution. We’ll all be better for it.

There are many manufacturers backing out of their previous 100% commitments to EV vehicles because well, we all know it not feasible at this time. Unfortunately we know California is agenda driven by its politicians, I don’t think they will use common sense and change. They will continue to push 100% EV even though they tell their residents not to charge there EV’s certain days/times because the grid can’t handle it. 🙄

I don't have a problem with electric cars. I am a car enthusiast, especially when it comes to performance. Electric cars generate 100% of the torque from 0 rpm. ICE cars have a linear power curve. It gradually increases and then drops off at a certain RPM. Electric cars, especially Teslas are the future of performance cars. Look at the plaid mode model S. Things will only get crazier, performance wise from here. How much quicker can an electric car become? I feel like in some ways Teslas are already defying the laws of what physics says is possible on street tires. I just want to be able to choose if I want to purchase an electric car, not be pressured.

Yet performance parts importers and manufacturers still use California as a base of operations.
