We at Milaan love what we do, so it’s always a joy to get to share our work with others! Here, Associate Director of Programs Javed Abbas leads a session about #Milaan and its work on the #SustainableDevelopmentGoals for a group of American students at the American Institute of Indian Studies (AIIS) studying Urdu via the U.S. Department of State’s Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program. In this session, Javed discussed the manifold challenges (and the even sweeter rewards) of working with adolescent girls, the importance of building an ecosystem in which girls can thrive through community and family engagement, and the crucial need for cross-sectoral collaboration.

Due to colonial legacy and religious and dominant class ideology, Pakistan, after 76 years of independence, seems still struggling with questions of which languages to develop, the colonial, Indigenous, or the lingua franca (Urdu), instead of considering multilingualism as a resource it is viewed as a problem. One of the underlying reasons for children failing to meet the expected literacy standards is that most early language/literacy teaching programs, reforms, or approaches are designed using deficit models. These models place blame on the students, teachers, textbooks, and parents. It is time for early literacy reforms or language pedagogy to revisit those reforms and prioritize bridging the gap between school and outside of the school. January 24, International Day of Education. 📚 This year, UNESCO dedicates #EducationDay to the crucial role education and teachers play in countering hate speech, a phenomenon which has snowballed in recent years with the use of social media, damaging the fabric of our societies. "The world is seeing a surge of violent conflicts paralleled by an alarming rise of discrimination, racism, xenophobia, and hate speech. The impact of this violence transcends any boundary based on geography, gender, race, religion, politics, offline and online. An active commitment to peace is more urgent today than ever: Education is central to this endeavor, and learning for peace must be transformative, and help empower learners with the necessary knowledge, values, attitudes and skills and behaviors to become agents of peace in their communities." - UNESCO Our teams at PSA BDP stand in solidarity with International Education Day, actively promoting awareness and advocacy for global education.🫶 #EducationDay #HateSpeech #teampsa #unesco

On #IndigenousPeoplesDay we should not forget that 40% of the global population does not have access to education in a language they speak or understand. The challenges are most prevalent in regions where linguistic diversity is greatest such as in sub-Saharan Africa and Asia and the Pacific. Inclusivity in education is crucial for preserving traditions and empowering communities. No learner should be left behind. 📰 Explore our policy paper "If you don't understand, how can you learn?": https://bit.ly/3s9F9Ru #IndigenousPeoples #WeAreIndigenous #EducationForAll

Last Thursday, we wrapped up a highly successful Global Classroom/Student Conference in Issyk-Kul, Kyrgyzstan. Over 50 participants from 37 countries, most of them students, gathered for a 4-day marathon to discuss the challenging topic of transitional justice, its tools, and challenges in relation to old, frozen, or new conflicts. It would be impossible to mention all the case studies presented, which ranged from the role of political dynasties in Southeast Asia, to how authoritarian regimes misuse constitutions and democratic frameworks in Latin America, to the main factors explaining the failure of democracy in Afghanistan. Discussions included the challenge of establishing official truths during reconciliation processes, the crucial role of civil society in promoting justice for minorities, the consequences when transition to democracy occur without justice, the impact of weaponised memories of past conflicts on transition, and how participatory filmmaking can contribute to transitional justice. The 2024 Global Classroom cohorts discovered that their countries face similar problems, albeit in different contexts. They expressed how interconnected they felt and how solidarity can be an answer to the tough job of a human rights defender. We are so proud of them! Many thanks to the OSCE Academy in Bishkek for their impeccable curation and to the European Commission (DG INTPA) for making this meaningful encounter possible. #transitology #democratisation #humanrights #humanrightseducation #justice #encounters Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria Arab Master in Democracy and Human Rights Mahidol University European Regional MA Programme in Democracy and Human Rights in South East Europe (ERMA) Campus Global para América Latina y el Caribe Global Campus Alumni (GCA) https://lnkd.in/dy2kSEB9

This post is the first in a series of student-created content, as part of an experience-gaining initiative supported by our marketing department. Jaden's (G11) first special report follows: "What’s up, everyone? We’d like to proudly introduce an annual inter-school project taking place here in Beijing: Future Thinkers. This project’s goal is to design a library for a Migrant Children's Foundation-associated school for orphans, led by students from multiple international schools across the city. Here are some of the key aspects of Future Thinkers: · 10-week project. · Collaboration among students from BCIS (that’s us!), WAB, and representatives from MCF. · Hosted at ArkA and BCIS. · Free-of-pay. · Demands us to collaborate with and inspire each other, as well as display compassion, in order to best design the most optimal library for the orphans. If you want to find out more and continue getting updates on this exciting project, follow us, and we’ll take care of the rest!" - Jaden, G11 #FutureThinkers #BCISCollaboration #BCISLeadership #BCISPersonalization #InternationalEducation

"Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today." – Malcolm X. Through education, we can envision a world where differences in individuality, ethnicity, race are celebrated, ignorance is eradicated, and lasting peace becomes not just an ideal but a reality. We stay committed to nurturing minds that will shape a future of harmony, empathy, and understanding. For it is in learning that we find the enduring foundation upon which lasting peace is built. On this International Day of Education, let’s work on making education accessible to all. Bridging the gaps in educational opportunities is a step towards creating a more equitable world, where every child, regardless of background or circumstance, can contribute to building lasting peace. At Dharmavel Inspire africa, our goal is still to educate, empower, and enlighten the young individuals. #internationaldayofeducation2024 #sdg4 #qualityeducation #dia #dharmarvelinspireafrica

As you head back into the classrooms this week, we wish you the absolute best of luck and a whole bundle of strength! In your discussions about school holidays with your students, why not explore topics like Eid alongside Easter? In our latest blog, "Understanding Ramadan and Eid: A Brief Guide for Teachers," I have a conversation with Boman Adil, an incredibly knowledgeable Afghan Multicultural Education Aide to discuss Ramadan and Eid, and what that looks like for our students. This may be particularly useful for any teachers new to working with Muslim students. You can check out our conversation here: https://lnkd.in/g3XeuBCN
