Why is India reaching a semi-final in this year's Olympics a big deal? For an 8-time Olympic gold winner, this should have been a no big deal, right? Well, the last time India clinched the gold medal was 44 years ago, in 1980. So, what happened to the team that was once dominating the game? Of the 12 Olympic editions since 1928, India won in 8 until 1980. Absolute dominance! After 1980, what caused such a decline that a champion side could hardly get into the top 3, let alone win the gold medal? There may be a plethora of reasons, but the primary cause is the change of the playing surface. You see, until the mid-70s, the game was played on a grass field, unlike what we see today. Indian players who bred on the fields of Punjab, Kerala, and Goa were simply unbeatable. It was during this time that the International Hockey Federation mandated the game be played on synthetic astroturf, the one we see today, for all the international tournaments. Shockingly, the Indian Hockey Federation didn't even object to this rule change for God knows what reason. So what? Hockey is hockey. India should have played their game they played on grass fields and continued to win on astroturfs too, you might think. No. Hockey evolved from a "game of skill" to a "game of brute strength" altogether. We were not a match to the Australian and European players' raw power. Besides, even today, India has limited astroturf grounds to play due to their expensive nature. Europe and Australia have thousands of them, while India has about 200. This gave them a clear and sheer competitive advantage over us, and it was a complete downhill after that. Amidst all this upheaval, India won a Bronze medal in the last Tokyo Olympics, ending the 40-year-long medal drought. Our men have successfully entered the semi-finals this year. Imagine a team playing hockey extraordinarily in certain kind of ground (say grass grounds), then comes a time when the rule changed and the nature of ground also got changed, can you imagine what would have happened to the team that aced in hockey. Most of the people will think that every team will have to cope up with the changed scenario and the posed challenge for everyteam would be same. Surprisingly, it is not. Indian hockey team's performance dipped with the introduction of astroturf in the game because it changed the circumstances in which the game was being played. Indian players motor skills in natural ground was next to none, even when they were not amongst the strongest of the player, in fact hockey was not a sport where only strength mattered, it was more about skill at that time. With changed scenario, physical strength matters more than the skills. Indian players deployed diverse skills in grass grounds, but introduction of astroturf changed the game and we see surgence of European teams in the game. Another factor was that the astroturf was very expensive, there were no turf ground in India to practice for almost 15 years after its introduction in olympics. So, it is very special chance for Team India to win a gold after such a long wait in Olympics. And Team India has come a long way. After 50 years, Indian Hockey team won back to back Olympic medals.🇮🇳 There are some beautiful stories behind every medal. India has such a glorious history in hockey, often it is confused as the national sports of India. Between 1928-80 India was so dominant, that they won 8 Golds, 1 Silver and 2 bronze medals. With Astroturf coming in, speed of hockey increased, European countries and Australia became the strong nations however due to lack of infrastructure India could not catch up with the pace. India hockey’s darkest period was 2008 Beijing Olympics, where they failed even to qualify. There were some honest attempts to create a IPL like league to revive hockey, but lack of money and attention were big blockers. Even today we lack the adequate facilities in India, hats off to the grit of Indian player and hockey fans. It was the last international for the wall of Indian hockey, Sreejesh and team made sure it was LIT. Special mention to Odisha Government and Naveen Patnaik in reviving the hockey infra, organising some top world tournaments to promote the sport. "In 2000s Indian hockey players aspired to be Olympians and now they aspire to be Olympic medalists" The above quote by P R Sreejesh aptly sums up the progress made by Indian hockey in the last 10-15 years. From the lows of not qualifying for the 2008 Olympics and finishing last in the 2012 edition to winning back to back medals in Paris after 52 years, Indian hockey has come a long way. For our country with such scarce sports achievements, success in any sports thrills the supporters but success in hockey holds a special place in my heart, purely because of our glorious past and the progress being made to reclaim our golden days. Winning a medal in a team game is a herculean task as you require 15-18 world class players and you have to win several group and knock out matches for a podium finish. Despite the above, hockey has contributed 13 of the total 41 Olympic medals for India. The credit for this turnaround should be given to everyone involved starting from players to Hockey India for getting foreign coaches, mental conditioning coach and scheduling long tours against strong opponents. A special mention must go to the Odisha government for adopting the sport and sponsoring the team when no one was willing to sponsor the team. Moreover, Odisha has built the world's best infrastructure for hockey and has hosted several big tournaments such as world cups. One of the biggest reasons for the downfall of Indian hockey was the lack of modern infrastructure [astroturf] which has been solved by the Odisha government. Odisha has set a great example for promoting sports and if each Indian state can adopt one sport then we can only imagine the positive impact it can bring. Lastly, as a fan I have also gone thru a journey of continuous disappointment with hockey results to now enjoying the success. If we viewers can continue supporting our players and providing viewership to sports (not only during Olympics but through the entire 4 years), then sponsorship, money, infrastructure development and motivation for players would automatically flow in. Riding on IPL's success, India saw the emergence of over 15 sports leagues such as ISL, Pro Kabaddi League, Premier Badminton League, Hockey India League and International Tennis Premier League, to name a few. Barring ISL and PKL, none have survived. "IPL made everyone believe leagues are the way to go. They forgot that cricket was the most popular sport in India, the best sportsmen from the world are playing in it and it is a TV-friendly sport," explains Joy Bhattacharjya, CEO, Prime Volleyball League (PVL). He cites the example of the badminton league, which had stars such as P.V. Sindhu and Saina Nehwal. "When Sindhu and Nehwal played each other, the stadiums were packed but nobody bothered which team they were representing. The league format works only in team sport," says Bhattacharjya. "The biggest problem is the economic model. Everyone equates themselves with IPL, but they don't understand that cricket is a different beast altogether. To make your business viable, you need to keep your costs low. There will be losses, even IPL made losses for almost 9-10 years,” says Tuhin Mishra, co-founder, Baseline Ventures. "Leagues such as IPL and PKL have attracted significant investment from corporate sponsors and media companies. #fieldhockey is known to be #india 's national game but of late it had been reduced to the State game of #odisha (being the sponsor/Global Partner). It is a well known fact that the Chief minister of the state has been the patron of the game for the past decade or even more and helped Indian hockey a lot. But what it is has resulted is that all international games are being exclusively hosted in either Bhubaneshwar or Rourkela. This exclusivity limits the reach of the sport to other regions with equally good world-class stadiums & facilities. Hence, depriving fans and potential young sports enthusiasts of exposure to top-level hockey. India , currently ranked 5th in the world and the reigning Olympic medalist are playing exiting hockey for some time now. It is time #HockeyIndia and its partners/sponsors look into this issue and distribute International matches to other states as well.
