Our Journey into the FAs of an Organising Commitee Continues! Today we talk about CTY. CITY OPERATIONS is responsible for building a strong liaison between External Delivery Partners and Milano Cortina 2026 for City Operations projects – pre-Games and at Games Times – and is in charge of planning, monitoring and coordinating activities and services with local entities. CTY also supports the host cities in setting up a City Command Centre and liaising with other Operational Centres created by Milano Cortina 2026 (Main Operations Centre). Finally, they facilitate the integration of External Delivery Partners into operational readiness.

The Paris Games are over, and Los Angeles is off to the races to prepare the city’s transit system for what officials are calling a transit-first 2028 Olympic Games. Here’s where we stand on our mobility projects. Here are the projects on track: The Crenshaw/LAX light rail line is a key connector for the millions landing in Los Angeles. By 2028, it will link with the airport’s new automated people mover train and the Inglewood transit connector, shuttling passengers to major LA28 venues. Three Bus Rapid Transit lines from North Hollywood to Pasadena, Hollywood to South Central and from Northridge to North Hollywood before 2027. Metro is also on track to open light rail extensions in east and west L.A. What will we not see: Four key light rail projects connecting the Valley, South Bay and gateway cities to the Metro rail system are delayed until the 2030s. What’s the hold up? Metro has struggled to source the funding needed to accelerate some of its major transit projects ahead of the Games. Very much looking forward to attending and moderating a session at The Operational Real Este (OpRE) Festival on 27th June. The agenda feels fresh and it is great to have a conference focused on the operations of real estate. As we always say, it’s the people that make a home and make a difference to how you experience spaces. (Listen to the latest episode of our podcast Housed as we discussed just this!) I am loving the topic of the experience economy that I will be discussing with my very lovely and insightful panel - Joe Persechino, Jenny Shaw and Mark Clacy-Jones. What is the experience economy? Are we doing enough? Is the right level of investment there? If you are going and want to catch up, please get in touch. #realestate #experienceeconomy #property

A former Portuguese colony, Macau is now Asia’s equivalent of Las Vegas … except that instead of being a leisure activity, most visitors to Macau take the business of gambling very seriously! Unlike Vegas, hardly anyone drinks alcohol at the tables until the business of making (or, more likely, losing!) money is done. Another difference is that Las Vegas competes with many other locations in the US, whereas Macau is the only Chinese territory where casino gambling is legal, which gives the businesses there a significant advantage. Nonetheless, the city is still recovering from Covid lockdowns and a lackluster economic recovery, with most companies still trading at very low valuations as a result. We visited some impressive sites in Macau and heard the respective strategies of companies such as Galaxy and Sands to grow market share and diversify revenue streams, while still pulling out all the stops to compete for the wallets of the ever-important VIP big spenders. After a tour of one of the complimentary suites for VIPs spending >$100k a day, no other hotel room can ever quite compare! Lastly, it seemed to me that most visitors to Macau are not desperate, poor folks hoping against all hopes for a lucky break. They are upwardly mobile, mostly young people, bedecked in the latest fashions, clutching luxury handbags, and gambling simply for the fun of it. Put it this way: I felt far less conflicted walking through Macau’s Casinos than I often do walking through South Africa’s…
A destination of contrasts and opportunity, Macau is as opulent as it is historic. And what a privilege to get a taste of both. Foord’s Understanding Asia tour delegates and the Foord team hit the ground 'walking' in the morning through Macau old town only to step into the enormity of casino wealth and inspiring presentations on location at both Galaxy Entertainment Group and Sands China to comprehend the potential of this region and the Chinese obsession with gambling. Follow us for more tour updates over the coming days as we lead this immersive, yet entirely unique investment experience through this fascinating region. Next stop, Hong Kong. #finance #investment #assetmanagement #corporatetravel

I was a last minute substitute to attend this at Hull New Theatre last night. It was really good, completely sold out and it got me thinking about Hull’s tenure as UK City of Culture back in 2017 and, more specifically, the legacies from it. All the talk in the run up to 2017 was about return on investment and making sure legacies were created that lasted for years afterwards. Many people were sceptical this would be the case but 7 years after our tenure ended I think it’s safe to say that was absolutely the case. The stand out example is Connexin Live, Hull , a brand new concert arena that has attracted some fantastic live acts and brought tens (hundreds?) of thousands of additional people to the city many of whom spend money in nearby hospitality venues, shops and hotels. The city centre public realm works and improvements to the Marina and Fruit Matket areas were all as a result of City of Culture (although some of the new pavements are starting to look a bit tatty and being replaced with tarmac - pull your finger out please Hull City Council !). The money spent on Ferens Art Gallery (which resulted in it being able to attract a completely different level of exhibitions including The Turner Prize) continues to reap rewards as does the capital investment in Hull New Theatre which is now able to attract major West End productions like the one I watched last night. It’s great to see Albion and Kingston Squares buzzing and the surrounding bars, cafes, restaurants and hotels busy much more regularly than was the case pre investment. Add to the above the fantastic memories the amazing events created and the number of city residents that experienced an art / cultural event for the first time and I think it’s safe to say we smashed it. PS Don’t we also have the most successful Millenium Project? 🐠 #hull #culture #ukcityofculture #smashingit 🎭🎼

The new Co-Op Live arena in Manchester… I know it had its teething problems (understatement of the year?) but now that it’s up and running it’s really impressive from a Facilities perspective. And with ambitions to be the most sustainable arena in Europe, you can see how this could become the blueprint for future venues. Not sure how I feel about supermarkets inside arenas but I guess they’ve got to pay for it somehow 😂 #FacilitiesManagement #FM #CAFM #FacilityServices #Facilities

Progress Update 👍 We are well on the way towards the purchase of some further venues with some offers accepted and undertaking necessary legal enquiries and building surveys. We hope to be announcing more in the coming months. We are also in detailed negotiations with multiple other properties and it is worth noting that our due diligence process has been developed to manage risk with both our investors and funding partners in mind. Director and chair of the Property subcommittee, Pete Cornforth, said; “In any MVP acquisition we are looking to balance our cultural and social mission with the property fundamentals, state of the market and future aspirations of the venue operating team. Although not totally surprising, we continue to uncover shoddy commercial landlord practices that require quite focussed due diligence and improvement plans ahead of commiting shareholder funds to the acquisition of a property. Part of MVP’s ongoing mission is to ensure that as an owner we manage and maintain our properties to the appropriate standard and can act as an exemplar to others in the cultural sector.” "We are very proud to say that we have been able to submit applications for further funding support to help address some of the repair issues on some of the properties we are looking at, but which would then enable them to be brought into complimentary cultural use and thus giving sustainable futures' for the buildings as a whole." #musicvenueproperties #mvp #events #venues #musicvenues #ukvenues #grassrootsvenues #ownourvenues

To all my contacts, if you haven’t already done so, this is your final chance to make sure you stand up and ‘have your say’ for the survival of #AshwellMotors who are at risk of closing, after 40 years serving the local community unless the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority and Liverpool City Council to actively listen, agree and implement the owners credible proposals for designated customer parking. Section 278 of the Highways Act 1980 is an enabler to deliver the funding for such changes, as it’s intention is to mitigate the impact of such developments on the local community! Make sure #nobodyleftbehind in #regeneration as this is what the #planforprosperity clearly states - this is probably the first test of that plan! Steve Rotheram Nick Small Network Rail
🚆 Today is your last chance to have your say on our plans for the new Liverpool Baltic station.
