RFSI Original ➪ Reframing Our Understanding of Regenerative In the transition to regenerative agriculture, there has been a significant focus on soil health but in a recent keynote presentation John Kempf explained that there’s something else we need to focus on: regenerating our capacity for stewardship. To do this, we need more stewards, we need to take care of these stewards, we need to build regenerative supply chains, and we need capital. There is not enough money flowing to rural communities to support the significant role these communities play in the regenerative transformation. One of #Bayer’s strategic priorities is to help shape regenerative agriculture by investing in innovations that increase food production, farm incomes and climate resilience, while also protecting and restoring nature. Bayer is working on the decarbonization of the food value chain focusing on farmers’ activities and connecting them with companies from the food value chain. The idea is to reward growers for adopting regenerative agriculture practices like using cover crops, tillage reduction, crop rotations and precision nitrogen application. These activities sequester carbon in the soil while improving soil health, resilience and productivity as well as limiting emissions. #bayer #sustainableagriculture

Organic Valley will Pay Dairy Farmers for Climate-Smart and Regenerative Practices Organic Valley initiated its in-house carbon insetting program, offering both technical support and payments to dairy farmers for adopting regenerative agriculture. They aim to enroll 500 farms over five years, and implement nearly 1,200 regenerative practices. They’ll fund this initiative through the creation of their own carbon market, ultimately cutting the middleman out of the value chain and giving that stake to farmers. I feel this will have a better incentive alignment between credit issuers and farmers, where suppliers don't have to pay a third party to administer their credits. That being said, I don't know how this will impact the reliability of practices, where a third party like Indigo uses the same standards of measure for all of their projects.
