I am excited to announce that the Perth-wide service project working with Uniting WA providing essentials to those experiencing homelessness has been published in national news website Horizons, on YouTube, and on Baha'i Blog! ⭐ https://lnkd.in/gQ-FJ5k6 ⭐ https://lnkd.in/gArqBPQR ⭐ https://lnkd.in/gX7zgM7E Sonia Raisi and I teamed up to initially organize a collaboration service project between the ECU and UWA Baha'i Societies, but as we learned more about Uniting WA's need for large-scale donations, we decided to take on the challenge of transforming it into a Perth-wide event. We had never organized an initiative of this scale before, so we wanted to share some of our learning! 1. Take time to learn from the professionals. It is imperative with any project to maintain honesty in what can be accomplished with your capabilities alone, and when to seek wisdom from other professionals. Recognizing that we had little education on what it is like to be experiencing homelessness in Perth, we decided to reach out to Rhys Powell from Uniting WA, since Uniting WA is the leading nonprofit in Western Australia for tackling this challenge. Our Zoom meeting with him allowed us to refine our vision and task breakdown to maximize the effect we could have on our local community. 2. Diversify advertising, but invest the most time on one-on-one invitations because they are harder to miss and more enticing to accept. We let others know about the event through the ECU and UWA Baha'i Society Instagrams, youth group chats, junior youth group leaders, emails sent by local institutions, and one-on-one messages between friends and acquaintances. By far, the most effective form of communication that influenced others to participate was the final one. 3. Be clear in communicating the level of inclusivity of the event. We strongly encouraged all the junior youth groups in Perth to participate in the project by collecting from their local neighbourhoods. However, many of the older generations misunderstood this encouragement to mean that the event was only for youth and junior youth. Thus, they thought that they could not participate, even though this was an all-inclusive event. Some more details: ✨ We had 150-200 donors total ✨ By the end of the event, we had received so many donations that the stage was overflowing! ✨ About 70 people attended the event ✨ The program consisted of a presentation from Rhys, refreshments, and a social portion If you want to get involved in our next service project, feel free to send me a message! The UWA and ECU Baha'i Societies are committed to organizing events that are focused on including as many individuals as possible with the goal of eliminating apathy towards social issues and nurturing a sense of united protagonism throughout Perth.

Many child protection challenges emerge in the context of travel and tourism. Where children often fall victim to child labor, sexual exploitation, and trafficking. With an increasing number of travellers globally, children are becoming more vulnerable. “So far we have collectively failed. Child sexual abuse and exploitation flourish because we fail to protect the children. We see progress, but so much work remains.” - H.M Queen Silvia of Sweden The United Nations hosted a high-level event on October 16th to emphasise child protection as a crucial component of sustainable travel and tourism. H.M Queen Silvia stressed the importance of #collaboration to ensure children's safety: “Collectively, we need to do more. We need to agree on standards and goals. And they must be implemented to make a real difference on the ground.” With collaboration in mind, World Childhood Foundation hosted its 2023 Gala in New York that same day. Which is now on the path of raising $1 million with a singular goal: to end sexual abuse, exploitation, and violence against children. NAIDOC Week is here and this year's theme is "Keep the Fire Burning," which highlights why preserving and sharing the valuable cultures, histories, and accomplishments of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples holds great significance for all Australians. ❤💛🖤 As a business and as individuals, we wanted to make a commitment to educate ourselves and do better in acknowledging, respecting and learning from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, which includes listening and understanding the long lasting impacts of how our country was first settled and stolen from its traditional land owners. 🤝 As one of our first steps, we began work on our first Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) - Reflect. We worked closely with an internationally renowned Cultural Advisor to genuinely understand what our first steps should be, and how our plan would evolve as we moved through the reconciliation process. 📰 Our overall goal is to create a more inclusive and culturally aware workplace, a workplace that understands, values, and respects the histories and cultures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Recently spent some incredibly rewarding time volunteering at the Rixensart Asylum Seekers Centre in Belgium! For me, being a responsible citizen goes beyond rhetoric; it is about extending a genuine helping hand to those seeking refuge and embodying the essence of social responsibility. Volunteering is not just about making a difference; it is about the real, tangible impact you can have on the well-being of asylum seekers. It is a chance to contribute to a more inclusive and compassionate society, and the cultural exchange that comes with it breaks down barriers, promoting unity in our global village. On a personal level, this experience has been transformative. Stepping out of my comfort zone, developing empathy, acquiring new skills – it's a journey of growth that goes beyond the volunteer hours. It is about evolving as an individual and realizing the power we hold to make positive change. For me, volunteering is not just about giving back; it is about building connections and community. It is about strengthening the fabric of society, creating bonds that transcend cultural, linguistic, and social differences. In a world facing challenges, responsible citizenship is not just a choice but a calling. The power of social responsibility is something you feel in actions. Volunteering at the asylum seekers center is my commitment to positive change, fostering an environment where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. As Taylor Swift's Edinburgh concerts approach, reports claim the city's homeless are being relocated to make room for incoming tourists. TFN reported that Edinburgh City Council moved unhoused people from hotel accommodations to cities like Glasgow and Aberdeen. The Council denies evictions, stating those recently declared homeless are being sent outside Edinburgh due to limited space. Councillor Jane Meagher emphasized using tourist accommodations as a last resort. Homeless Network Scotland condemned the situation, calling for urgent housing investment.
