Mercury Systems, Inc., a technology company that delivers mission-critical processing power to the edge, today announced it was awarded a $31 million contract from L3Harris Technologies (NYSE: LHX) to provide solid-state data recorders for the U.S. Space Development Agency (SDA)’s Tranche 2 Tracking Layer satellite constellation. L3Harris was selected in January to design and build 18 satellites that will provide near-global missile warning and tracking coverage, with preliminary missile defense, under SDA’s Tranche 2 Tracking Layer program. The Tracking Layer is part of SDA’s Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture, a layered network of military satellites supporting multiple missions in Low Earth Orbit (LEO). Tranche 2 follows the 16-satellite constellation L3Harris is building for Tranche 1, and the four recently launched satellites it built for the Tranche 0. #military #defense #defence #militaryleak https://lnkd.in/gCfVfNHu

Link 16 is a commonly used military signal SDA satellites will use to connect to radios on the ground. U.S. forces, NATO and international allies rely on the capability for real-time data exchange. The head of the Space Development Agency expects to begin demonstrating space-to-ground Link 16 connectivity over the U.S. by the end of the year — as long as the agency secures long-awaited approval from the Federal Aviation Administration. SDA now has 27 satellites in orbit. Those spacecraft are not only equipped to communicate through Link 16, but also have what are called optical inter-satellite links that allow them to share data with one another #satellite #innovation https://lnkd.in/g9sgb6Jx

In a move that could shape the in-orbit satellite servicing market, the U.S. Space Force’s Space Systems Command designated Northrop Grumman’s Passive Refueling Module (PRM) as a favored interface to enable future in-space refueling of military satellites. The PRM has a docking mechanism to allow a refueling vehicle in orbit to transfer propellant to another satellite to extend its useful life. https://lnkd.in/ekrF4eWy

Two sets of satellites from the Space Development Agency and Missile Defense Agency were launched together Wednesday as the organizations aim to demonstrate capabilities that could be used to detect and track adversaries’ hypersonic weapons and other advanced threats. One batch includes four L3Harris-built systems that will complete Tranche 0 of SDA’s Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture (PWSA), which will include a total of eight missile-tracking space vehicles and 19 data transport satellites on orbit. Additionally, two Hypersonic and Ballistic Tracking Space Sensor (HBTSS) platforms — one built by L3Harris and another by Northrop Grumman for the Missile Defense Agency — also went up. France is getting serious about space defense. In addition to the Graves Radar for targeting, France is waiting to launch its first YODA patrol satellite in a near-GEO orbit. It has also initiated the TOUTATIS demonstration to launch the Splinter and LiSA-1 demonstration satellites in LEO. Splinter looks like a laser demonstrator, and LiSA-1 is an NEI satellite. France's military programming law through 2030 has a project called BLOOMLASE for a ground-based laser blinder and FLAMHE for an orbital laser system. I'm glad France is revealing what it is doing to aid with deterrence. https://lnkd.in/eBAdmkTZ
