ALICE is an acronym that stands for Asset-Limited, Income-Constrained, Employed. It refers to households that earn above the Federal Poverty Level (FPL) but cannot afford the basic cost of living in their county. Despite struggling to make ends meet, ALICE households often do not qualify for public assistance. United for Alice data shows that 27% of Hoosier households identify as ALICE. These households earn enough to not be considered below the poverty level, but not enough to afford the basics. It means Hoosiers might not be living in poverty, according to the federal government's definition, but they're hurting. They're using food pantries to get by, depending on our meals like the ones you pack with Million Meal Movement to feed their families.

🔎 Analyzing the Impact: The Expanded Child Tax Credit (CTC) 📊 In 2021, the expanded CTC significantly lowered child poverty rates, demonstrating the power of direct financial assistance. With the end of the expansion, ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) families face a critical setback. These families are employed and earning above the Federal Poverty Line, yet they struggle to afford basic necessities. The payments from the CTC helped reduce food and housing insecurity, and families reported having more ability to sustain their money each month. As a result, researchers from the Center on Poverty and Social Policy found 800,000 children were kept out of poverty from July to Nov. 2021. We must advocate for our ALICE population to ensure real and sustainable change is created for these families. #ChildTaxCredit #EconomicEquality #UnitedWayNCA #EITC #CommunityUnited

The 80% Federal Poverty level bracket has lowered. That means what upper poverty level used to qualify for in community services, they do no longer. Let me be clear, the income level did not change aside from the piddly 3% annual Cost of Living Adjustment while the actual Cost of Living index rose much more than that. It used to be that lower middle income took you out of that community service bracket; but, left you with too little income to pay for those services out-of-pocket. This is now true for Upper Poverty level income. Was this purposeful in order to give middle income earners a false sense of security? I think so; because, the dollar now buys less than ever before and everyone is in a higher tax bracket without actually making more $$.

Check out our blog post, 'The Blurred Line Between Neglect and Poverty.' The cost-of-living crisis has made it harder to distinguish between material poverty and neglect. Many families are struggling to meet basic needs, which doesn't mean they are neglecting their children. However, poverty can increase the risk of neglect due to stress and other factors. With over 1 in 4 children living in poverty, it's crucial to support families early. Poverty is a relative concept that affects every aspect of a child's life. From living in cramped conditions to going without basic necessities, poverty can have a significant impact on children's development. The standard way to measure child poverty is through relative household income, which considers a child living in poverty if they live in a household with income below 60% of the national average income. However, there are other ways to measure poverty, including absolute poverty, material deprivation indicators, and measures of the depth and persistence of poverty. Let's work together to combat poverty and ensure that every child has an opportunity to thrive.

Two million infants and toddlers in America live in poverty, and poverty and low income remain the most striking demographic of babies in the United States. Yesterday's release of the 2023 poverty rate shows more young children live in poverty today than last year. Science tells us that living in these conditions can have a detrimental impact on healthy development, including school readiness and success in the workforce. It's time we act to increase the economic security of families. The first step is to adopt and expand the Child Tax Credit. https://lnkd.in/gmfbzzqQ

❗ This #StressAwarenessMonth, a reminder that all people living in poverty suffer extra stresses on day-to-day decisions that can cause or exacerbate long-term conditions - perpetuating the poor-health poverty loop. As written in the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF)'s UK Poverty 2024 report: "The pressures of meeting the rising costs of essential goods and services can cause stress and anxiety. It often means that families need to make cuts in other areas, which can also affect overall wellbeing. "Not being able to pay bills and going without food, a warm home or toiletries have a significant impact on people’s mental and physical health. It also makes it harder for children to participate at school, which may have a long-term impact on their future prospects." ✊ In this election year, all parties must commit to real policy change that protects and supports low-income households.
