ALICE is an acronym that stands for Asset-Limited, Income-Constrained, Employed. It refers to households that earn above the Federal Poverty Level (FPL) but cannot afford the basic cost of living in their county. Despite struggling to make ends meet, ALICE households often do not qualify for public assistance. United for Alice data shows that 27% of Hoosier households identify as ALICE. These households earn enough to not be considered below the poverty level, but not enough to afford the basics. It means Hoosiers might not be living in poverty, according to the federal government's definition, but they're hurting. They're using food pantries to get by, depending on our meals like the ones you pack with Million Meal Movement to feed their families.

January is Poverty Awareness Month. As a company that works day in and day out to create and preserve affordable housing in the U.S., we’re deeply aware of the scope and scale of impact of poverty. According to the National Low Income Housing Coalition, the U.S. has a shortage of 7.3 million affordable rental homes available to renters with extremely low incomes. That means there are only 33 affordable and available rental homes for every 100 extremely low-income families. At Boston Financial we are working to close the gap in affordable housing accessibility. Learn more about the critical need to build and preserve millions of affordable homes, and find out what you can do to be a part of the solution: https://lnkd.in/e8UAucXG #povertyawarenessmonth #lihtc #affordablehousing #housingforall *image courtesy of The National Low Income Housing Coalition

Did you know that the expanded Child Tax Credit lifted millions of children out of poverty in 2021? The transformative program slashed child poverty rates to an all time low, and subsequently led to better health and more stability for children and families across the country. But now, new Census data shows poverty rates for kids are inching upward. We can’t let another year go by with children and families struggling to meet their basic needs, when we have the tools to prevent it. https://lnkd.in/eP7XEYiF

📈 We are pleased to today launch the North West Poverty Monitor, a new resource which reveals the scale and nature of poverty across Greater Manchester, Merseyside, Cheshire, Lancashire and Cumbria. The Poverty Monitor is a free, easy-to-navigate tool which provides data across six themes: poverty and deprivation, education, fuel and food insecurity, housing and homelessness, the labour market, and social security and debt. 🔧 It’s designed to equip you with the evidence you need to tackle socio-economic disadvantage in your own activities – from policy development, advocacy and campaigning through to writing funding applications and service design. The data is presented through a combination of charts, maps and tables, including a number of interactive visualisations so that you can identify and compare specific data. Most figures are provided at a local authority level, and, where possible, at a more local level. 👉 Explore the data: https://lnkd.in/eMu5279i

“With current levels of participation and funding, we estimate that 10.2 percent of Utah residents had resources below the poverty level, as measured by the Supplemental Poverty Measure (SPM), and 8.2% of children in the state were living in poverty. If the seven programs were fully funded and all eligible people received benefits, the poverty rate in Utah would have declined to 7.9%, and the child poverty rate would have declined to 5.2% (figure 2).” Read the full report from Urban Institute at https://lnkd.in/gUAzQ6Zr.

Really depressing data from Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) on the state of #UKPoverty We know through the #YouthVoiceCensus that young people are feeling this, and it is impacting their life chances, and their confidence in themselves and their future. When #hrleaders are thinking about workforce inclusion the impact of experiences of poverty must be better understood. When employers are thinking about youth employment the issue of poverty must be better understood. It is why I am so passionate about the work of Youth Employment UK and our Membership for employers which helps them to do better for all young people. We will be supporting JRF and our third sector partners in raising the issue of #UKPoverty with politician's who are looking to be elected later this year. Each and every one should be committing to tackling poverty in their communities as representatives.
📓 JRF's annual report on the state of #UKPoverty launched this morning, revealing some stark truths. 👇 📊 The latest analysis from our researchers shows a worsening picture of poverty in this country, with families in poverty now on average needing thousands to get out of poverty. The average person in poverty has an income 29% below the poverty line, equating to a gap of £6,200 for a couple with two children under 14. 📈 With 14.4 million living in poverty in 2021/22, our politicians must take action on this vital issue. 🗳️ A general election is on the horizon, and we are demanding practical solutions from political parties to address this. The U.S. has the second highest poverty rate among developed nations, with 29% of the population struggling just above the poverty line. American Christians often focus on global poverty, but what about those in our own communities? Data from the OECD and U.S. Census Bureau reveals the severity of this crisis, including 40 million families in the ALICE category (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed). Dr. Alvin Sanders of World Impact reminds us, “As Christians, we do not have the option to opt out of trying to make a difference in the lives and hearts of those in poverty. It’s all over Scripture.” Discover how we can break the cycle of generational poverty by building relationships and restoring dignity, reflecting the heart of Jesus in our communities. #PovertyAwareness #CommunityImpact #GenerationalChange #SocialResponsibility #TriStateArea #NewYork 🔗 Learn more about our responsibility to our neighbors

The 80% Federal Poverty level bracket has lowered. That means what upper poverty level used to qualify for in community services, they do no longer. Let me be clear, the income level did not change aside from the piddly 3% annual Cost of Living Adjustment while the actual Cost of Living index rose much more than that. It used to be that lower middle income took you out of that community service bracket; but, left you with too little income to pay for those services out-of-pocket. This is now true for Upper Poverty level income. Was this purposeful in order to give middle income earners a false sense of security? I think so; because, the dollar now buys less than ever before and everyone is in a higher tax bracket without actually making more $$.
