Taking a 7yr old and 5yr old to a museum to see the Dutch masterpieces was an inter-city adventure and a great lesson for me, perhaps for different reasons than you might think! Yes it was loud, fast and chaotic...the whole tour lasted about 45 minutes as they glossed over the classics and found joy in the animals, the naked breasts and of course, running up and down the staircases. But in the few moments that we actually looked and talked about the art, there was gold. Here's a sample of the full blog: 1: Kids don’t care about Rembrandt and maybe we shouldn’t either? "It's only a painting mum. Who cares" I loved this conversation, because, of course that is their first reaction! Why bother looking at this painting when there are things to climb on, run round, and explore in the real world. A great point well made - lets not take the art too seriously! 2: It’s not about the art. They wanted the story behind the art. Why did he paint this? Who is the dead man? Who are the other men? Why are they there? Where are the girls? Why is there no blood dripping? Why are they cutting him open? This is the point of the art. It's not a fact to be learned and repeated, but a way of thinking about ourselves and the world. It's a training ground for asking questions, seeing our humanity reflected and finding out about our past. 3. We all see art through our own perspective 4. Art House SF welcomes our first full-time employee! Her name is Peppy and she's a Pomeranian puppy from Latvia. Even though we're not part of the Frameline festival this year in SF, we do think that Peppy looks great on the red carpet :) On a more serious note, what do art dealers like me really do? Let's unravel this mystery. 1. Art gallerists vs. art dealers. Most art galleries in the US no longer buy art from artists. They exhibit art and if it sells, share 50/50 with the artists. This is called a "consignment model". Galleries take less of a risk, but they also invest less in artists. 2. Primary vs. secondary market art dealers. Primary-market art dealers buy art directly from contemporary artists and then resell it. A popular model in the early 20th century, but not anymore. Primary-market dealers often work with lesser-known artists, promote them, and build long-term relationships. Secondary market dealers resell artwork of famous, well-known artists. The few I know usually work in the $50k+ price range, and they'd like to call their art "investment art." I'm a primary art dealer. I purchase work from artists directly, which means: a. I believe in them b. We're able to offer affordable prices (no middlemen, no hype) c. I'm committed to them longer-term Hope that helps. What questions do you have about the art market?

One element of my research work explores the different – or similar - ways we perceive and understand the world around us. As a result, I love when I see resonances between works of art from different times and places, as artists manage to express something essential and enduring in the world around them. The first image below is from a current MOMA exhibition of works on paper by Georgia O’Keefe, called “To See Takes Time (https://lnkd.in/ea46NDDX). The painting, “Night Star III”, dates from 1917, when she was exploring aspects of the Texas landscape and sky. It immediately brought to my mind the second image, which is the cover from Nina Simone’s 1971 album “Here Comes The Sun”. For me, both evoke a sense of light emerging from the darkness, as well as the recurring, circular pattern of time occurring in natural cycles. This can be a comforting counter-balance to the linear arc of birth, maturity and death dominating many Western cultures and systems, which often fails to provide a deeper and enduring sense of meaning. Many Indigenous cultures hold a circular notion of time and it can help to foster a healthier relationship with nature, where we aim to design and live in systems that respect natural cycles instead of one-way, extractive ones focused on satisfying short-term desires… #art #time #circularity #georgiaokeefe #ninasimone #worldview
