I’m absolutely on board with Sira Dheshan Naidu's take on how powerful our choices as consumers really are. This brings me right back to a thought that stuck with me after our chat on LinkedIn Live not too long ago: "Buy the future you want." My key takeaways from that conversation: 1. Choice overload in the modern market Our shopping aisles are a jungle of options. Each one is there for a specific reason, often for just a single use. Do we really need to grab everything off the shelf? It's not a simple yes or no answer – but each pick we make sends a message about the impact we're ready to endorse. 2. Celebrating earth-friendly brands On a heartening note- it's genuinely uplifting to see so many brands out there putting in real, passionate effort to protect our planet. They're walking the walk. And that gives me hope. 3. The power of purchase Now, this is where our individual influence comes into sharp focus. Every purchase is a ballot cast for the future we envision. Today marks a poignant anniversary for our company. It's been 38 years since the devastating fire that swept through our facilities, taking with it not just our physical assets but also our spirit momentarily. It was a day that changed our trajectory, but it didn't define us. In the wake of that inferno, we faced an immense challenge. Everything we had worked for seemed to vanish in smoke and ash. But as we sifted through the debris, we discovered something resilient within ourselves—a determination to rise from the ashes, stronger and more resilient than before. In the years since that fateful day, we've rebuilt, not just our structures but our resolve. We've harnessed the lessons learned from adversity, transforming them into opportunities for growth and innovation. Each setback became a stepping stone, guiding us towards a brighter future. Today, as we reflect on the journey from devastation to triumph, we acknowledge the dedication and perseverance of every member of our team. It's your unwavering commitment that has brought us to this moment—a moment where we stand tall, fortified by our collective resilience. As we look ahead, we know there's nothing we can't overcome. WD40, the story of failure and innovation. A #throwbackthursday to the now notorious Fuckup Nights we hosted in Amsterdam a couple of weeks back. Failure is rarely talked about, let alone celebrated. It was a rare evening of personal storytelling, with lessons and takeaways for everyone. I opened up with the short (and admittedly random) history of WD40: - In 1953 a fledgling start-up, the Rocket Chemical Company, set out to create a new line of rust-prevention, solvents and degreasers - Working in a small San Diego lab, the small team had 39 failures - 39 times of getting it wrong; 39 times of thinking it will never work - Continuing relentlessly, on the 40th attempt, the formula was successful - With water displacement (WD) properties, the name was set: WD40 - While originally designed for missile outer skins, people began using the product at home - In 1958 the product made its first appearance on store shelves - Since then, it's been so successful it's estimated that at one stage, four out of every five US homes have a can. Interestingly, whenever I mentioned this random story to colleagues, whether from the Netherlands, UK, Denmark or US, they recognised the brand. Following an introduction from Victoria Edwards, we had three superb stories from Angela MacOscar, Reinhard Huebner and Matt Simpson. A fitting evening following the Aquatech Innovation Forum.
