What is FemTech and where is it heading? Sage Revell, Life Sciences specialist and partner at Brown Rudnick LLP, answers these questions and more in her article in August's issue of Financier Worldwide Magazine. FemTech refers to software and services that use technology tailored towards women's health. The list of areas it covers includes fertility solutions, menstrual healthcare, cancer screenings and treatments, women’s sexual wellness, menopause and hormonal disorders. The article caught our eye because this is a space we're interested in, and have invested in through female welllness brand Feel - Wellness, Reimagined. One of Feel's products is Feel Menopause, designed to combat the many symptoms of menupause, such as hot flushes, night sweats, and fatigue. The historical lack of funding in FemTech has meant lack of growth, but as Sage highlights in Catching the Herd of FemTech Unicorns, the tide is now turning and governments and investors alike are now backing the exciting innovations fueling this space. It’s certainly a space to watch! Read the article in full below. #FemTech #WomensHealth #FemaleHealth #Menopause FemTech Lab

🚀 Excited to share insights from our panel discussion at Perspektywy Women in Tech on "FEMTECH - Technology in the Service of Women"! 🌟 Delving into #WomensHealth, we explored how technology can foster inclusivity and support women. Here are the key takeaways: 👉 Beyond Reproductive Health: Femtech is not just about reproductive health. It started with a focus on fertility but has evolved to address a broad range of women's health needs, from mental health to chronic conditions. 👉 Current and Future Needs: While femtech addresses many needs like menstrual health, pregnancy, and menopause, there are still areas that require more attention, such as education and combating cyberviolence. 👉 Gender-Specific Health Considerations: It's crucial for women to consider gender-specific health conditions (menstruation and menopause, endometriosis, PMS, breast and cervical cancer...) Tailored health care can significantly improve wellbeing and productivity at work, as well. 👉 Role of Bots: Bots (like Victoria chatbot) can be more than just technical support. They have the potential to independently support women's health and emotional issues, offering immediate assistance and comfort. 👉 AI in Femtech: AI-powered apps offer incredible opportunities for personalized health care but also pose risks like data privacy concerns. Balancing innovation with safety is key. 👉 Health prevention, regular screenings, and addressing women's specific health needs are vital for enhancing workplace wellbeing. Technology can be a powerful ally in this journey, fostering a more inclusive and supportive environment for women. 👉 I'm happy to mention that Sophia Health is already contributing in this area by providing personalized healthcare solutions for women, ensuring they receive care tailored to their unique needs. 🚺 A huge congratulations to Bianka Siwinska, PhD for organizing this incredibly successful event with 10,000 participants! Thank you to my fantastic co-panelists: Martina T., and Joanna Gzyra-Iskandar for their valuable insights and to Karolina Wasielewska for great moderation! 🙌 #Femtech #WomenInTech #HealthTech #WomenAtWork #WorkplaceWellbeing #Perspektywy2024 Sophia Health, Monika Lukasiewicz, MD, PhD

Given femtech has about 50% of the global population as target customers – as well as studies showing women are likely to spend 29% more per capita on healthcare needs than men, while also being 75% more likely to use digital tools for health-related information – it is perhaps not surprising it’s predicted by experts to be the “next big phenomenon”. On the surface, the signs support the hype. While still a small segment of the healthtech market, femtech is growing exponentially: currently valued at $28bn (£22.3bn), up from $500m a decade ago, the global femtech market is estimated to reach $60bn by 2027. But inside the industry, things are far from rosy. Investment in femtech stands at just 1-2% of total health technology funding. And between 2011 and 2021, only 4% of new medical technology drugs relating to female-specific health conditions were approved in the US. Even once femtech companies have secured funding and their product is ready for the market, they face challenges that companies targeting men’s health do not. https://buff.ly/4fePjUr #womenshealth #femtech #healthtech #digitalhealth #healthcare #healthcareinnovation #startups #innovation #health #medtech #healthcareresearch #femalehealth #genderhealthgap #reproductivehealth #venturecapital #vc #funding #investment #grants #maternalhealth #periods #menstruation #sexualhealth #sextech #menopause #fertility #pregnancy #postpartum #eggfreezing #IVF #healthequity #pelvicfloor #pelvicfloorhealth #hormonehealth
The ‘huge disadvantage’ women behind femtech phenomenon face

We read an article in The Guardian that hits close to home. It talks about the huge disadvantage women behind the FemTech phenomenon face—something we at GLORIAH have experienced firsthand. When 50% of the population is impacted by women’s health issues, it’s staggering that less than 4% of healthcare R&D is focused on women-specific conditions like menopause. This lack of attention isn’t just frustrating, it’s limiting the progress we can make in improving women’s lives. At GLORIAH, we’re working to break the silence around menopause and women’s health, but the truth is, it’s an uphill battle. Especially in male-dominated spaces where the conversation often doesn’t even get started. Securing funding? Building partnerships? These tasks are made harder by the fact that only 2.3% of venture capital funding goes to women-led companies. We’ve felt the sting of that statistic in more ways than one. Why? In large part, it’s a lack of education. Menopause and women’s health aren’t seen as priorities by those who aren’t personally affected. It’s too often dismissed, underfunded, and misunderstood. But that’s why we keep pushing. Because women’s health is everyone’s health, and the conversation is long overdue. Our mission is simple: to make menopause mainstream, to get the support and solutions we deserve, and to drive the innovation that’s been too long ignored. The need for FemTech is real. The change we can bring is immense. It’s time the world takes notice—and we won’t stop until it does. Here’s to demanding better. 💪 Shout out to Mo Carrier, Tess Isabelle Cosad, Farah K., Clio Wood, Valentina Milanova 🇺🇦, Rachel Bartholomew, Tara Attfield-Tomes - so refreshing to see this brought to mainstream conversation! #femtech #womenshealth https://lnkd.in/e3QuQPQb
