According to the @Doximity Physician Compensation Report, the specialties with the most recruitment & highest demand are in primary care. Projections indicate a 5-figure shortage of primary care physicians by 2034. PCPs tend to be at the lower end of the compensation scale for docs, as well, so that will likely exacerbate the situation. Two psychiatry specialties are in the top 5, as well, and the shortfalls there are also likely to continue to increase with increased demand for mental health care. Is your specialty in high demand? I'm very grateful to Donovan Ellis, PhD at Emory Dep of Psychiatry for an insightful discussion on improving access to outpatient mental health. As wait times between intake calls and first appointments average 2-3 months, every moment matters for those struggling. His clinic has launched a promising solution - a two-part consultation model — a 1-hour assessment to understand patient experiences and a 1-hour session to identify treatment resources by matching patients to last-minute openings. This allows them to deliver meaningful care even when provider calendars seem "full." They are excited about continuing to launch the programme and conducting proof of concept research, but Dr Ellis shared that from what they've seen so far, it is showing much promise; as for the patient, it's 2 hours of sessions and care that they may have had to usually wait months for, that they can get in the next week. We also discussed technology's potential to further coordinate care - identifying newly opened slots automatically to connect people faster and making it easier for clinicians to collect relevant patient information and create personalized treatment plans to maximize the time they have. As mental health issues continue growing, creative solutions that maximize limited capacity without further burdening clinicians will be essential.
