One thought: The power of listening to understand I recently took a Duck Tour in Boston with my kids. It was a blazing hot day, nearly unbearable to be outside, and yet our tour bus/boat encountered a pack of teenagers taking full advantage of the Lynch Family Skatepark. They sped across the flat terrain, flew over the jumps, spun, kicked, flipped–and certainly looked to be having a heck of a time–even in such weather. While their resilience in the heat impressed me, what interested me more was learning how this community hub came to be. A little more than a decade ago, the spot where this skatepark now sits was a barren piece of land. Today, it hums with activity, thanks to the efforts of Nancy Schön, the sculptor known for Boston's iconic "Make Way for Ducklings" statues. When Schön found that skateboarders were using her sculptures as a playground, she confronted them to ask why. But instead of just venting her frustrations or simply shouting at them to get off (which had been her original plan), she listened to their reason. She heard that these young skaters simply had nowhere else to go. They had tried to have a skate space dedicated or built by the city, but to no avail. So, she took action and helped them advocate for a skatepark. She fundraised, conducted stakeholder consultations, and convened public design meetings to make it happen. And finally, after years of work and countless hours of labour, the park came to fruition. Schön's journey from adversary to advocate shows how genuine engagement can transform conflict into collaboration. By listening to the skaters and understanding their needs, she catalyzed a movement that culminated in the creation of the largest skatepark in the Northeast. It's a story of perseverance and empathy—one that reminds us, especially in these polarized times, of the transformative power of truly hearing one another. And in the power of listening to find common ground and to create change. -JD #Communications #CommunityEngagement #EmpathyInAction #UrbanDevelopment #ListeningMatters

I have always been a very outgoing person with a pretty social life, both work and personal, but after becoming a parent during the pandemic that took a huge shift. I was sharing with someone recently that the most isolating experience I have had in life is being a toddler (2 under 2) parent. You are constantly trying to make sure your children are in safe places and have adults who care for them. It is hard to describe how difficult it is to take toddlers to places that aren't safe. A playground with a 6 foot tall slide is like Mt. Everest to an 18 month old. I consider myself highly resilient and adaptable and always trying to figure out how to make a solution. So, I have some ideas I am putting out here. I may not have the technical knowledge, appropriate connections or capital to make these happen but maybe there are others who can take the ideas and run with them. 💡 YELP/GOOGLE to include a way for people to highlight "good for toddlers/preschoolers" - A stay at home mom has started this for Orange County but how can we do it everywhere? https://lnkd.in/gHpPwrWj 🏞 City Buildings/Parks to start repurposing spaces that are already open to the public for young kids to play - tons of indoor playgrounds are being built but aren't there already buildings and unused space we can tap into? ❇ Repurpose old commercial buildings into indoor spaces for working parents with toddler safe areas. Think of the IKEA drop off area for toddlers with an attached WeWork (or similar).

Visit a Montgomery Parks skate park on any given weekend and you will see people of all ages, backgrounds and skill levels embracing the thrill of the concrete bowl on various wheels — inline skates, roller skates, bikes and skateboards. You will also spot observers seeking fresh air, camaraderie and perhaps some physical activity as well. These public spaces provide opportunities for diverse groups with different interests and agendas to come together to play and connect. Montgomery Parks, a large park system just outside Washington, D.C., in Montgomery County, Maryland, features 419 parks serving more than a million people. The department recently updated its long-term plan, the Park, Recreation and Open Space Plan, which revealed a trend: demand for more opportunities for physical activity and social interaction across diverse demographics. The county’s evolving landscape has transitioned from suburban to more urban, with densely populated areas once overlooked now gaining prominence. The revised plan aims to construct facilities that unite communities and foster increased physical engagement, social cohesion and outdoor exploration. This strategy spurred the decision to embark on the construction of five new skate parks, supplementing the existing three parks scattered throughout the county, as part of an inclusive initiative to enhance recreational opportunities. Absolutely no person should be ‘recruited’ into a system where their role isn’t valued or defined. Nobody should be expected to do the impossible - raise extremely traumatised children with little to no support or tools to do so. It’s time to invest in our current carers. Provide the support. Pay them accordingly. Give them access to training that they want to complete with a budget for carer development that is in line with professional development of case workers. Treat carers with the respect that you would give to a colleague in the workplace. Stop recruiting and start retaining!
Caught up with ultramarathon runner Pat Farmer today, thought I’d better do some training beforehand 🏃♀️😅 We talked about the desperate need for more foster carers with Hatch Carers, especially ways we can support and recruit carers better.
