Globally, 1-in-3 women — or almost 736 million women — have been subjected to physical and (or) sexual intimate partner violence, non-partner sexual violence, or both, at least once in their life according to UN Women data. Worriedly, girls are at particular risk of violence—1 in 4 adolescent girls is abused by their partners. In 2023, at least 51,100 women ended with one final and brutal act — their murder by partners and family members which means one woman killed every 10 minutes. Moreover, up to 58% of women experience technology-facilitated gender-based violence, and up to 70% of women suffer in conflict zones, wars, and humanitarian crises. The International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women is intended to highlight this ongoing crisis and call for collective action for its solution. November 25 to December 10 is an established period of 16 Days of Activism encouraging governments and individuals to take meaningful steps to prevent violence against girls and women. In the card, have compiled actionable steps you can take during this time to make a difference.

Every 10 minutes, a woman is killed. Almost 1 in 3 women globally are estimated to have experienced physical or sexual violence. And, female victims of trafficking are subjected to extreme violence at a rate 3X higher than males. Across the world, the epidemic of gender-based violence continues to be a persistent and devastating reality for women and girls. These crimes can manifest in several different ways, including: intimate partner violence, sexual violence and harassment, human trafficking, and child marriage. Violence against women remains a widely underreported crime due to the stigma, impunity, and culture of shame that surrounds it. In fact, less than 40% of women who experience violence seek help. This is why days like International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women are so crucial; through organizing, educating, and challenging harmful societal norms and beliefs, we can make progress towards a world in which the human rights of all women and girls are upheld. "Violence against women does not only concern women. It concerns everyone, and the work to combat it must be done by all." - The United Nations. Creating a world free of gender-based violence starts with all of us. Share this post to spread awareness and stand with survivors everywhere. *Sources: United Nations, UN Women

🌍 Today is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and it also marks the start of the #16DaysActivism. The statistics are alarming: 👉 736 million women experience physical/sexual violence globally 👉 140 women die daily from femicide 👉 Only 0.2% of funding goes to prevention efforts This year's theme, "Every 10 Minutes, a woman is killed. #NoExcuse. UNiTE to End Violence against Women," calls for urgent action. We need: ✔️ Increased funding for prevention programs ✔️ Better survivor support systems ✔️ Stronger law enforcement ✔️ Zero tolerance for impunity The time for change is now. Together, we can create a future where every woman lives free from fear and violence. As we mark International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the UN cites sobering statistics. ❗️ Femicide—the most extreme form of violence against women and girls—remains pervasive globally. ❗️ One woman or girl is killed every 10 minutes by their intimate partner or family member. ❗️ Globally, 85,000 women and girls were killed intentionally in 2023. ❗️ 60 per cent of these homicides—51,100—were committed by an intimate partner or a family member. You can read the full article at https://lnkd.in/eK2BvDMj In this 2023 IDB blog, https://lnkd.in/eyFMCtvN, María Caridad Araujo, IDB's Chief of the Gender and Diversity Division, notes that in Latin America and the Caribbean: ❗️ 25% of women in the region have been victims of physical or sexual violence by their intimate partners. If we include violence outside of intimate relationships, this number increases to 34%. The campaign, 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, has started. It is clear that an intersectional approach is needed, and the IDB continues to seek new approaches to prevent, address, and eliminate gender-based violence. I will continue to post about ending gender-based violence throughout the campaign, and ask for your shared support in amplifying the message that there is #noexcuse to harm women and girls.

Violence against women and girls is a profound and ongoing crisis that impacts millions of lives, calling for our attention. Every day, countless women and girls around the world endure abuse—whether it’s physical, sexual, or emotional—that leaves lasting scars on their bodies, minds, and spirits. This suffering is deeply rooted in systems of gender inequality and harmful cultural norms that, knowingly or unknowingly, give power to those who harm and silence those who are hurt. Survivors of intimate partner violence often find themselves battling trauma, mental health challenges, and economic setbacks that are passed down through families and communities, sometimes for generations. Adolescent girls and those who face additional layers of discrimination, like women with disabilities, are often at the greatest risk, finding that doors to support are too often closed or difficult to reach. When crises like climate disasters, wars, or economic struggles hit, the dangers for women and girls are exacerbated. Displacement, resource scarcity, and the breakdown of community support make it even harder for them to find protection. During these times, reports of violence spike, and too often, protections that should be in place fall short. The most vulnerable women—those who are already marginalized—face heightened risks of being exploited or hurt. Addressing these interconnected challenges requires compassionate, comprehensive, and coordinated action to not only prevent violence but also tackle the systemic inequalities that perpetuate it. Together let’s take a stand and #UNiTE to end violence against women. #16DaysOfActivism #KingstonTakesAction #EndGBV To learn more: https://lnkd.in/gH-e9BB Follow Kingston’s GBV support services: @sackingston, @trellishiv, @kingstonintervalhouse, and @resolvecounsellingservices
