For utilities who don’t have the resources internally to crunch data, the startup company provides insight into how electrification is impacting the grid and what kind of programs utilities might offer to nudge consumer behavior. Scaling a nascent industry like Direct Air Capture feels like solving a big puzzle. You need to make all the pieces (customers, investors, suppliers, etc.) fit together to achieve the ambitious growth required for net zero.    As we‘re looking to deploy Project Dawn with a capacity of 20,000 tCO2/year in 2026, we really see the need for true pioneers as partners.    That’s why we were excited to welcome the Breakthrough Energy team around Ashley and Francisco to our facilities in Ismaning this week.    The Breakthrough Catalyst program (link in comments) is one of the few initiatives taking the lead on FOAK financing. They support the most promising technologies in this crucial step of scaling up from pilot stage to commercial readiness.    We gave them a tour around our lab and showcased our Hydrolyzer stacks and absorber modules – the heart and lung of our DAC system. 🌟 Investment news 🌟 Eddy Grid, a new addition to the Rockstart Energy portfolio set to join our program in February, has just secured €1.5 million to accelerate the fight against grid congestion! 🌿🔌 Eddy Grid ensures a steady supply of affordable green energy, contributing to sustainable consumption and indirectly supporting the electrification of mobility and industry. This capital will be used to expedite Eddy Grid's growth. The team plans to expand its offerings, serving customers more broadly and accelerating collaborations, including the Energy Hubs in partnership with Skoon Energy. Leading the funding round were the Graduate Entrepreneur Fund, Herberth Samsom, along with Rockstart’s Energy Fund and Volve Capital. The energy sector is complex and highly regulated, so how do Emera and its operating companies deliver excellence today while planning for tomorrow? Recently, I was invited to speak on the Utility Innovation Council and Industries of the Future panel at Mind the Bridge’s Scaleup Summit San Francisco to address this question. This summit brings together start-ups and corporations with the goal of using market intelligence research, strategy and venture acceleration to scale up their impact. Joined by Southern California Edison (SCE) and EWE AG colleagues, we discussed how the global energy sector is finding ways to capitalize on innovation to accelerate utility growth. With colleagues from Europe, Asia, and North America at the summit it underscored the shared nature of our challenges. However, it also highlighted the potential for achieving better outcomes by working together and through the exchange of ideas.
