What was the APPE rotation or internship that taught you the most? What lessons did you learn? Did you appreciate it at the time? I was recently reflecting on an internal medicine rotation I had in 2008 at Grandview Medical Center with Dr. Matt Kauflin, PharmD, BCPS. It was the most demanding rotation I had, and the only reason there was a close second was because I spent a month in the NICU and had no clue what I was doing. For this rotation with Dr. Kauflin, I remember the 45-minute commute in the dark early mornings, arriving each day around 5 a.m. and leaving well past 5 p.m., staying with the medical residents to finish rounds. While I’m convinced this rotation prepared me for the boards, the other lessons I learned have stayed with me. To show up on time and be prepared. To be ready to say, “I don’t know, but I’m ready to learn,” rather than talk in circles (and once taught, to make sure to study and remember that in the future because “I don’t know” isn’t an acceptable answer more than once). To understand that, yes, I was a student, but the team depended on me to be there. To realize I was capable of more than I had realized (and that someone else saw more in me than I did in myself). To know that growth comes outside of my comfort zone. To take responsibility for my learning and growth and to appreciate that there is no arrived. These are lessons that no classroom experience could have ever taught me.

I started my internship at one of the largest & busiest hospitals in the country. This post is a culmination of my thoughts & reality-checks that hit me over the past week: 1. Knowledge is King: I entered my internship after clearing my USMLE STEP 1 & STEP 2 with great scores. This gave me a strong solid foundation on clinical subjects that helped me understand what is going in an inpatient setting. When you have knowledge, you easily understand why an investigation was ordered and why so-and-so medicine was prescribed or stopped for a patient. Your eyes can only recognise what the mind knows! 2. Decision Making is Key: The hardest part about medicine is not always diagnosing or prescribing medicines. It is decision making! When it comes to acute settings, a doctor’s presence of mind and courage to take a decision regarding management often draw the thin line between life and death. 3. Everyone is at distress: Everyone in a tertiary care setting is overworked or in distress. The junior doctors, house surgeons, residents, nurses, attenders and cleaning staff are all overworked. The patients & bystanders are at distress. It is too hard to blame a single entity for the failure in patient care when it happens. Innovative Synergy: Faculty of Pharmacy at TIU and Awamedica On January 22nd, 2024, the Dean of Students at the Faculty of Pharmacy at Tishk International University (TIU) organized a visit to Awamedica. This visit proved to be exceptionally productive, marked by in-depth discussions that spanned a range of initiatives. The deliberations commenced with the exploration of formalizing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and extended to the establishment of an advisory committee. The collaboration envisioned encompassed guest lectures by industry experts, active participation in workshops and conferences, facilitation of internships, and the initiation of various collaborative activities, including shared research endeavours. Notably, the dialogues between the two parties emphasized the incorporation of industry-based technical electives into the curriculum. Awamedica authorities, demonstrating their commitment, expressed their readiness to support the Faculty of Pharmacy at TIU in the delivery of certification courses. We are delighted to highlight the Career Networking Breakfasts at Habs. 🌟 These events have become a cornerstone of our Lower Sixth experience, offering students a unique opportunity to engage with professionals across various sectors. Most recently, students attended an enriching event where esteemed Doctors and Dentists graciously imparted their expertise and experiences to our Lower Sixth students from both schools. Since the inception of these breakfasts in 2018, they have evolved to encompass a spectrum of career pathways. Initially focusing on key areas like Medicine and Dentistry, Law, Finance, STEM and Creative and Media, we have expanded our offerings to include even more diverse fields. This term alone, students will delve into Entrepreneurship, Science and Alternatives to Medicine, Public Sector and Charities, and Degree Apprenticeships – totalling ten enriching sessions for the academic year. We have intentionally crafted these events to depart from traditional lecture formats, instead fostering intimate conversations between students and professionals. By inviting representatives from various careers within each sector, we aim to expose students to a multitude of career paths available, showcasing the flexibility of modern career trajectories. The overwhelming popularity of these events speaks volumes. Visitors consistently remark on the vibrant atmosphere and the students' eagerness to learn and engage. We encourage anyone interested in sharing their expertise and experiences to reach out and join us in shaping the future careers of our students.
