LGBTQ+ people in Middle East and North Africa subject to intense digital oppression, research finds. Key takeaways: 1. Authorties in parts of the Middle East and North Africa are reportedly exploiting dating and social exchanges apps to persecute LGBTQ+ individuals, according to comprehensive research by human rights and digital advocacy groups; indicating a potentially malevolent misuse of technology. 2. Cybersecurity features on these apps hold significant importance to the LGBTQ+ community, with over half choosing to use an app based on privacy protection. Urgent need for tech firms to bolster user privacy and limit opportunities for surveillance was highlighted, displaying the direct relationship between tech infrastructure and human rights. 3. The sobering account of abuse highlights both physical and emotional violence, entrapment, and extortion tactics used by authorities; demonstrating the gravity and extent of victimization faced by LGBTQ+ people within these regions. ✨ Ace Week, originally Asexual Awareness Week in 2010, shines a light on asexuality annually. It's both a celebration of our progress and a push for acceptance of asexual identities. We've come a long way: from better representation in media to recognition by 2SLGBTQ+ organizations worldwide. Let's acknowledge these achievements together. #AceWeek #AsexualAwareness *ace = asexual spectrum identities

One of the most common questions I get through Gayta Science is how to collect inclusive gender data. On the surface it seems like a simple question, but the answer is extremely complex and contextual! The best I could usually offer was a list of resources and some high-level things to consider, UNTIL NOW! I am beyond excited to share Urban Institute's impressively comprehensive guide on collecting, analyzing, and reporting gender and sexual orientation data! I had the honor of being on the advisory board for this important work and am stoked to FINALLY have something so actionable to point people to! Major kudos to Jonathan Schwabish and team! You have compiled an incredibly useful guide that I am truly grateful exists. #lgbtq #datascience #dataanalysis #datacollection #dataviz #datavisualization #diversityandinclusion https://lnkd.in/e_xcRSqn

Google Maps - is this going too far? So I logged on to edit a client's Google Business listing this week and was asked to complete some additional fields in the business listing. Is this business woman owned it asked first. Hmm, well, I answered NO, so suddenly our business is classified as "Doesn't identify as women-owned". Next it asked about amenities and asked if we offer gender neutral toilets. Lastly, it asks if our business is LFBTQ+ friendly and if we offer a Transgender safe space. I think this is appalling, what do you think?

MakeLoveNotPorn represents the future of the internet designed and built through the female lens. The young white male founders of Giant Tech are not the primary targets, online or offline, of harassment, abuse, sexual assault, racism, violence, rape, revenge porn. So they didn't, and don't, proactively design for the prevention of any of those things on their platforms, and we see the results of that around us every day. Those of us most at risk every day - women, Black people, people of color, LGBTQ+, the disabled - design and build safe spaces and safe experiences. But we don't get funded, which is why we've not yet seen how much better, safer, kinder and nicer the world is for all of us when THOSE platforms operate at scale. Get your tickets NOW for Reimagine Sexuality here: https://lnkd.in/edMy2xpy to listen to ReimagineSexuality founder Rocio Pelayo in conversation with my stellar MakeLoveNotPorn curation team, head of curation Ariél Martinez and curators Angelina Cosmo and Saniyyah Lateef, M.A., on how our unique no-self-publishing-of-anything human-curation model makes MLNP the safest place on the internet - a model that is eminently scalable, and that every platform should emulate. In today’s complex world, understanding the intersectionality of marginalized identities is crucial for creating inclusive and effective development policies. Economic and social data collection must reflect the diverse experiences of all individuals to address inequalities accurately. M.V. Lee Badgett from Koppa - The LGBTI+ Economic Power Lab has published a discussion paper for Data2X, United Nations Foundation in partnership with Open Data Watch that explores the complexities of collecting data on sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, and variations in sex characteristics (SOGIESC), emphasizing its crucial role in understanding development outcomes through an intersectional lens. This work is part of our broader collaboration with Data2X and the Center for Global Development to harness intersectionality data for development. 🔗 Read the full discussion paper here: https://lnkd.in/eQPZ5rpF Lee Badgett has been awarded significant new funding from Pivotal Ventures. Recently, Melinda French Gates committed an additional $1 billion through 2026 to advance women's power globally. This generous support will enhance the efforts of researchers and advocates like Lee. 🔗 Read the announcement from Pivotal Ventures here: https://lnkd.in/eqw_Nb3c

🎤🎤I will have the opportunity to interview the curation team of MakeLoveNotPorn , founded by Cindy Gallop. This human curation process is one that is not seen anywhere on the internet. It is so powerful to see real people in an inclusive manner. Imagine a world where representation of reality was what we all saw on-line, or your kids saw. Yes, your kids, because unfortunately that is where their #sexeducation is occurring. And sadly it isn’t always with ethical, educational and realistic in mind. Supporting projects and innovation like the platform MakeLoveNotPorn is getting us closer to that reimagined world. #investors this is one of those opportunities that not only has a huge impact, financially but also socially. 💰🌏 Hope you can join me at Reimagine Sexuality Tech Conference coming up in October to learn more. #mlnp #sextech #investorsgroup #technologytrends

This #Pride Month, learn more about Urban Institute’s fifth Do No Harm Guide which examines the current state of #data around #gender, gender identity, and sexual orientation. Our goal is to provide a series of considerations regarding collecting, analyzing, and communicating quantitative data on these topics. Collecting demographic or identity-based data is often complicated by the evolution and nuance of language; words or phrases used yesterday may not be the same today or tomorrow. By understanding these changes and employing data best practices, researchers, analysts, and other stakeholders can help ensure that such data are used for good—to help address disparities and inequities faced by LGBTQIA+ people and to assess the effects of policies, interventions, and societal attitudes on their lives.
