The electric vehicle (EV) industry of China has become a highly charged topic in the international arena. The US and Chinese officials have very different, strong opinions on whether China is flooding global markets with cheap products, and EV is one of such as a result of excess industrial capacity. The development of this issue is very fluid and the controversy is highly likely to linger for quite some time. In fact, I doubt any industry analysts or gurus could precisely predict its outcome. No matter what happens, the marketing folks of those local EV manufacturers and their supporting cast would have some very challenging works ahead. Nevertheless, PR, as an important promotional element of the marketing mix, may be given a grudging role. Why? I am probably one of the few PR executives in China that can answer this question. In the April of 30 years ago (1994), I was in Beijing for almost three weeks to support the first promotional work of a massive brand building campaign for the then Chrysler as the car manufacturer fully intended to win the minivan project of China. I was stationed in Beijing and acted as the lead counsel for Chrysler’s brand building campaign the next three years. In 2003, I again was involved in PR works for another leading automobile manufacturer Nissan Motor as it established the latest ever automobile JV in China. I further worked with Nissan the next two years to help build its brand in this market. You may wonder that I, with such strong credentials in automobile related PR works, would continue to be heavily involved in the car sector after the two aforementioned programs. On the contrary, I have not provided PR services to any car manufacturers since then. The reason is simple: By the time I have finished the Nissan program in the mid-2000s, most if not all leading international car makers have already established a presence in China. They do not need corporate communication support but looking for marcom services such as advertising or event marketing to directly drive sales. The same challenge applies to the local EV makers the next few years – They do not need PR to build brand awareness, but they would desperately need help in marcom to sell their cars! If you’re an automotive technology supplier looking for a PR firm ... Watch out. There are a lot of agencies claiming to be “automotive experts.” But, oddly enough, they also claim to be experts in PR for retail. Or real estate. Or insurance. Or professional services. Or health care. Or hospitality. Or financial services. Or non-profits. Etc. Really? True expertise doesn’t come from claims. It comes from focus, from experience, from singular dedication. From working in this space. All day. Every day. Day after day. For decades. Expertise is earned the hard way. So if a PR firm claims automotive expertise, look more closely. If they also claim to be experts in a mash-up of other areas, you have to wonder ... Can they really be experts in everything? Or even anything? Or are they just experts at making claims? As a brand manager, I'm responsible for crafting creative communications for ATL marketing channels like TV commercials, billboards, radio, and press. It's something I've always dreamed of, and I'm thrilled to be doing it. ⏫ However, there are a few important considerations for anyone interested in this kind of position: 📗 Feedback is a crucial aspect of the job. How do you handle feedback, and how do you provide it? Managing creative teams involves navigating through various opinions and suggestions. 🎥 Production entails more than just the time spent on set. It's a multi-step process involving pre-production, production, and post-production. Be prepared for late extra hours and unexpected events. 🔋 Attention to detail is paramount. Overlooking even small details can have significant consequences. Do you enjoy tackling challenging creative projects, or do you prefer simpler ones? Share your thoughts in the comments below! #brandmanagement #brandmanager #marketingcommunications #worksecrets
