part 2 THE SKILLS REVOLUTION AND THE FUTURE OF LEARNING ABD EARNINGS ,.. and recognition is growing of the intersection between early education, health, and social services. This is an opportunity for the MENA region, whose preprimary gross enrollment ratio is the third lowest in the world. K–12 education is seeing increased focus on embedding future skills in curriculums and ways of teaching and engaging students. In my youth, attaining a higher education degree was an achievement that symbolised a rite of passage and a promise of financial stability. Growing up in a middle-class minority family in Asia, the aspirations for a young boy like me were traditionally set on engineering, medicine, or accounting. When I got accepted into an economics program in the UK, despite the financial strain that led me to juggle part-time jobs, including driving a taxi, the effort felt like a small price for the prestige of a college degree. Fast forward to today's rapidly evolving job market, where online learning, technological advancements, and the creator economy challenge the conventional value of college degrees. As an entrepreneur for over 25 years, I've observed a significant shift towards prioritising skills and experience over formal education. Giants like Apple, IBM, and Tesla, and even Walmart, reflect this trend by no longer requiring college degrees for many roles, highlighting a move towards reducing inequity in the labour market. This transformation is driven by the demand for relevant, adaptable, and creative skills. The World Economic Forum predicts that by next year, half of all employees will need re-skilling. Skills have become the new currency in the job market, with countries across the globe adopting initiatives to nurture this through practical, skills-based programs. Yet, the transition from a traditional degree-focused education system to a skills-based economy is not without its challenges. Societal prejudices, especially in Asian cultures, still equate academic degrees with success. Overcoming these biases requires a collective effort to redefine success and acknowledge multiple paths to achievement. In response, universities are adapting, moving towards experiential learning and continuous, lifelong education models that align with the dynamic nature of today's job market. This shift underscores the need for "educational agility" to stay relevant. As we stand at this crossroads, it's crucial to embrace this new paradigm with an open mind. The future of education and success is inclusive, recognising the value of both traditional degrees and skill-based qualifications. It is time to advocate for a broader understanding of achievement, where lifelong learning and adaptability are at the heart of personal and professional growth. What are your thoughts? Do you think a college degree is still valuable in today’s world? #EducationEvolution #SkillEconomy #FutureOfWork #LifelongLearning #RedefiningSuccess

International graduates place a high value on the standard of UK education and the opportunity to gain work experience in the UK. As such, it is no surprise that the International Graduate Outcomes 2024 report revealed that 50% of respondents were still living in the UK, though a sizeable proportion returned home immediately after their studies. At the QS Higher Ed Summit: Europe 2024 last week, higher education leaders discussed the importance of industry partnerships and supporting students with the in-demand skills needed for the future of work, including the importance of work experience for developing interdisciplinary learning, and the creativity and problem-solving skills needed for working with Generative AI tools. UK universities should collaborate with employers to ensure skills are embedded in the curriculum. Improving your employer engagement will help ensure your career support services are preparing students with the skills that employers value most, and will ensure that your university develops the capabilities that the global economy needs to support progress and prosperity. With more devolution and regional autonomy on the horizon it is vital that we all step up to address this disparity. Key mission statements such as opportunity for all and growth and prosperity for all the UK can only be realised through a change in behaviour and engagement
📊 New research reveals striking skills inequalities across the UK, with significant implications for employers and workforce development. Key findings from this research by the Learning and Work Institute: 🔍 "Almost one in three (30%) of 25-64-year-olds in the West Midlands are qualified below GCSE level" - highlighting a critical skills gap that needs addressing. 🌍 The UK's regional skills disparities are more pronounced than many European counterparts. In fact, "if the UK had levels of skills inequality like [Denmark, France and Sweden], then 290,000 more people - the equivalent of the population of Coventry -- would have GCSE or equivalent qualifications in the West Midlands." 📈 The future outlook is concerning: By 2035, projections show the gap widening further. While London is expected to have 74% of working-age adults qualified to A-level or equivalent, the West Midlands may only reach 59%. Opportunities for Employers: 💡 Earn and learn schemes can play a crucial role in addressing these inequalities 💡 Organizations can help break the "negative reinforcing cycle" where lack of skilled jobs leads to talent exodus 💡 With "three quarters of jobs in the UK projected to require level 3 qualifications or above by 2035," businesses investing in upskilling now will have a competitive advantage Challenges to Consider: ⚠️ Regional disparities in talent retention and attraction ⚠️ Need to align skills development with local economic growth ⚠️ Ensuring programs are accessible to those with lower qualification levels For employers offering earn and learn schemes, this research underscores the vital role you play in shaping the UK's skills landscape. By investing in workplace learning today, you're not just developing your workforce - you're helping to close critical skills gaps and create more equitable economic growth across the country.
