This is the remarkable transparent entrance to the underground bicycle parking garage Vijfhoek near Amsterdam Zuid station, on the Zuidas, where cyclists enter the bike park with so-called tapis roulants (moving walkways). We realised this entrance in 2018. The result is stunning. Four tree-shaped steel columns support a striking pentagonal steel structure measuring 33 by 4 metres. The columns increase in height as you go down. In the other direction, the façade glass gets higher and higher. The highest point is 4 metres. As a result, daylight reaches the reception area at the bottom of the tapis roulants and enters the stall space over almost its full width, creating a pleasant atmosphere. The characteristic pentagons in wUrck's design return in various places in the parking. While most bridges follow a straightforward design, there's one in Uruguay that's capturing everyone's attention. The Laguna Garzon Bridge, designed by Uruguayan architect Rafael Viñoly based in New York, features a distinctive ring-shaped structure. Although its silhouette may seem unusual, there's a purpose behind this unique design. Each half-circle section of the bridge functions as a one-way street, and due to its curved shape, drivers are required to slow down while crossing instead of speeding through like they would on a typical straight bridge. #Bridge #SlowDown #Drivers

Over the weekend, I popped to my favourite cafe at Paintworks for a quick bite. I’m a big fan of the scheme and having it on my doorstep has been a real benefit to me and many others in Brislington. I even like the latest phase, the architecture works really well to contrast it against the early designs. Sitting there in the sun and sipping my coffee on a little terrace outside the coffee van, feet firmly planted into a tardy old plastic grass carpet made me think of the placemaking potential that has been lost through a lack of thought for the public realm. The enforcement of ‘adoptable standards’, the dominance of carriageways over what little space was left for pedestrians, the excessive road markings, amount of car parking and lack of tree planting are all typical issues on new schemes but is particularly regrettable here, given the quality and the boldness of the approach to the buildings and the mix of uses the scheme provides. That evening I pulled out the IPad for a quick sketch and tried to explore what the potential of the scheme would have been with a balanced street approach. (Yes, I do design in my free time too.) The video below is my ‘quick stab at it’. I looked at how a series of spaces connected by rebalanced streets, punctuated by new trees and allowing the paint from the buildings to ‘spill out’ into the streets would transform it. Looking at the scheme from this perspective also made me wonder whether a new pedestrian bridge to the future redevelopment of St Phillips Marsh could help realise the Paintworks full potential? In all honesty, I don’t expect this transformation to happen any time soon which really brings home why getting it right first time is so crucial, and why it’s important to think of good places holistically, starting with the public realm.
