This April - Stress Awareness Month I'm here to share my knowledge as a clinical psychologist about the significance of identifying and controlling and normalising seeking help when in stress. While occasional stress is natural, it's important to recognize when stress becomes too much. As it can have an adverse effect on our general well-being : mentally, emotionally, and physically. It's acceptable to not feel okay and to seek assistance when necessary. There are tools there to help you deal, such as joining a support group, talking to a trusted friend, or contacting a therapist. Let's eradicate the stigma associated with mental health and foster an environment of transparency and encouragement. By working together, we can put mental health first and strengthen our ability to overcome obstacles in life. SELF HELP BOOKS DO NOT REPLACE THERAPY. I have come across a lot of people who read self help. In a way it's good that they are reading and it's helping them too but does it replace the need for therapy? If a depressed person reads 'Atomic Habits' will it change the cause and course of their issue? Self help books offer theories that are a temporary solution. 'Temporary' because once the person forgets the theory, their issues are back. I have come across enough people who read self help books and think they can advice others around because now they have bookish knowledge. Let me tell you as a mental health practioner that not every advice works for everyone, not every theory helps everyone, and giving free mental health advice without any research to prove it is dangerous.
