2000 people like Elliot are detained in mental health hospitals they shouldn't be in, because if they don't have a severe mental health issue they should be supported by social care in the community and not mental health specialists in NHS hospitals. The answer is not some nightmare, complex, impossible thing. For each of these 2000 people who are entitled to support in the community: - instruct local health commissioners to have a plan to move from hospital to community social care - if they don't get people out, we should send in a taskforce, backed by Rt. Hon. Wes Streeting MP to cajole, progress chase and make sure every health and social care system gets people out of hospitals and into the community. As ever. all it takes is the will to make it happen. #HomesNotHousing https://lnkd.in/ez83YFgZ

A shorter, open access, Covid-context article version of the book we posted about yesterday. Tonkin and Witaker, Play and playfulness for health and wellbeing: A panacea for mitigating the impact of coronavirus (COVID 19). https://buff.ly/3Q1cTdd Abstract In the early part of 2020, the coronavirus pandemic challenged human sociability as social distancing measures were introduced in an attempt to break ‘the chain of infection’. A central component of human sociability is our innate ability to play and be playful, individually or together, for our own enjoyment or for the benefits of others. This article explores the adaptive benefits of play and playfulness for health and wellbeing, at a time when community assets such as family, friendships, neighbours and community groups are physically inaccessible as we abide by the UK government requirement to Stay at Home, Protect the NHS, Save Lives. Using the Five Ways to Wellbeing, numerous examples showing how people have been able to ‘connect, be active, take notice, keep learning and give’ during the coronavirus crisis, exemplifies the transformative power of play and playfulness and the best of human endeavour.

Dame Clare Gerada will draw on over 35 years of experience, and reflect on the NHS's journey from its hopeful beginnings to its current struggles. Dr. Rachel Gibbons will bring a psychoanalytical lens to the discussion, exploring the emotional and psychological dynamics that shape our collective relationship with the NHS. Through her extensive work in group analysis and psychotherapy, Rachel will provide insights into the psychological toll on healthcare workers, who often bear the brunt of these conflicting emotions and expectations. 📣 New Evidence Brief: What works to support people who frequently attend emergency departments Supported by NHS England, Integrated Care Boards across the country are commissioning and delivering programmes to support High Intensity Use - commonly defined as using emergency department (ED) services five or more times per year. People who frequently use ED often have complex socio-economic challenges and suffer from multiple physical and mental health conditions. But what works to support them? Evidence suggests four key interventions 👉 Screening tools combined with clinical judgement to identify patients at risk 👉 Good primary care access and continuity 👉 Integrated multidisciplinary services 👉 A whole-person approach Read the full brief here https://lnkd.in/g3T8YbJa Produced by Anna Gkiouleka, PhD Amy Dehn Lunn and John Ford #healthinequalities #HIU

We’re concerned that The Guardian has reported that “82% of trusts surveyed [by NHS Providers] were unable to meet the current demand for children’s and young people’s services.” Shocking, isn’t it? Especially when we know that health play services can directly support children’s wellbeing and resilience AND can prevent mental health problems, including medical trauma. An increased health play provision can even help to improve efficiencies in the NHS by shortening procedure times, reducing the need for general anaesthetic and avoiding failed and repeat appointments. That’s why we're calling on the government to increase the play workforce in the NHS as part of our manifesto for children’s play in healthcare. 👉 Find out more about how we support health play services: https://ow.ly/k7xQ50SG7Vt

🌟 On National Good Samaritan Day, we at MeCare celebrate the spirit of compassion and kindness that drives us to look out for one another. Today, we're reminded of the importance of extending a helping hand, especially to those who might neglect their medical needs. 🌟 Whether it's due to fear, financial difficulties, or simply not recognizing the signs that it's time to seek help, some individuals may delay or avoid necessary medical care. As a community, we can make a difference by: Offering Support: Sometimes, just knowing someone cares can encourage an individual to take that crucial step towards seeking medical attention. Sharing Information: Educating our loved ones about the importance of regular health check-ups and early intervention can save lives. Being Present: Accompanying someone to a doctor's appointment can provide the moral support they need to address their health concerns. If you or someone you know is hesitating to seek medical care, MeCare is here to help. Please give us a call at 1-(718)-305-1995 Let's use National Good Samaritan Day as a call to action to be vigilant and caring, ensuring no one has to navigate their health journey alone. Together, we can build a healthier, more supportive community. #NationalGoodSamaritanDay #MeCare #HealthcareSupport #CommunityCare #BeAGoodSamaritan

A large press pack was in attendance at NSW Parliament House today as Greens MP Dr Amanda Cohn presented the final report following the Inquiry into the “Equity, accessibility and appropriate delivery of outpatient and community mental health care in New South Wales.” Read the report https://bit.ly/3RdDjZw Dr Cohn was joined by members of the NSW Mental Health Alliance including BEING’s CEO, Priscilla Brice and Judy Deacon, mother of Jesse who was shot dead by police less than a year ago. The report, including 39 recommendations, will make optimistic reading for many, drawing as it does on a wide range of inputs and pulling no punches about the scale and urgency of required action. Dr Cohn was however critical of the Government’s decision to water down 7 of the recommendations from “actions” to “investigations” which gives the Government more scope to delay their implementation. BEING broadly supports the recommendations included in the report which address our key demands for: - The expansion of the Safe Haven programme - The removal of the police as the automatic first response to those in crisis and - The need for a holistic and significant overhaul of the entire mental healthcare system. Read BEING’s media statement https://bit.ly/3RbSjaw The NSW Government also decided to release its mental health budget today, two weeks early. Read the statement https://bit.ly/3KuW9I8 The $111m ‘additional’ investment barely keeps up with inflation and fails to include the funding needed to enact the clear recommendations from the Inquiry report. For example, despite the recommendation from the Inquiry to expand the Safe Haven programme, there is ZERO allocation in the budget for this. BEING’s pre-budget request for additional operating funds has also been knocked back by the NSW Government meaning that from July 1st we are limited to 3 full time and 1 part time staff member to execute our mandate to advocate for the voice of lived experience. BEING is bitterly disappointed with the Government’s approach to the needs of mental health consumers which leaves the NSW system lagging far behind other states and territories.

💬 “Up and down the country, community-led approaches are being delivered which can support people with better management of chronic conditions, reduce hospital admissions and improve overall health and wellbeing. But because of the infancy of the work and/or lack of national profile (as a result of its scale) there is a lack of awareness, particularly of emerging approaches." This page via the NHS Confederation website highlights 14 different case studies that build a picture of the current landscape of neighbourhood working in England 🧬 Have you seen any neighbourhoods working in action nearby you?💭 The article link is in our bio or here 🔗⤵️ https://lnkd.in/ewNfEmhz 🌐 www.bslm.org.uk #LifestyleMedicine #HealthAndWellbeing #HealthyLifestyle #MindBodyHealth #HealthIsWealth #BSLM #1change
