Reflecting back on the last three days of the CIE 30th Session, what are my takeaways: A very successful and well-run event with 431 participants from 41 Countries, see the pie chart (26 from the UK) Huge networking opportunities to find out and discuss the application of light and lighting is approached across the world. A high number of students in attendance who wish to understand the practical application of light and lighting to aid their research. Research never seems to stop, there is always a bit more required. As Ron Gibbons (US) commented in one session, more research needs to be undertaken in the field rather than in the laboratory, but this does cost. In the past four years CIE have published 56 documents relating to light and lighting, no mean achievement considering the last four years and the requirement for agreement on each publications content. Quite a bit to think about which will influence my approach to light & lighting. With my CIE-UK (National Illumination Committee of Great Britain Executive Secretary hat on, why not consider joining the CIE at your national level. You gain a 66.67% discount on all publications and the CIE-UK provide bursaries for attendance at CIE events such as this Session, and much more … Drop me a line if you are interested 😊

It is open to all final year undergraduate, Masters, and PhD students across Europe and Eurasia. Students who have not yet been able to present at a major conference but would like to share their work are encouraged to attend. Equally, it is a great opportunity for more experienced students to present within their network. Students who don’t have anything to present are welcome to register to see their peers’ work. Prizes will be given for the top 3 best combined (abstract + presentation). Group discussion to follow.
